Cayman roof tent ? But not in a good way.................

I suspect that yesterdays gorgeous sunny weather, coupled with the heat absorbing properties of black paintwork have resulted in my latest issue.

I got in the car this morning and thought 'that's odd, my wife must have had the seat height near the top', as it felt as though the roof was touching my hair.

It turns out that the fabric rooflining has come away from the backing board !

Not just slightly, but hanging down over most of the surface area.

This is a common problem on Jaguars, which are my other hobby.

With them, there are specialist who offer a 'ready trimmed' fibreglass roof board as a direct replacement.

Has anyone come across anything similar for the 987 Cayman ?
 
No doubt somebody will be along but I've never heard of that happening before on a Cayman, or indeed of any such headlining replacement. My 987.2 Cayman S was black and on a sunny day the difference between the surface temperature of that and an adjacent white car was amazing. The white one you could lay your hand on but certainly not the black one!
 
I did some more research last night and it seems that headlining failure is common on Caymans of all generations.

Allegedly due to the ' health and safety friendly' adhesive that Porsche use.

I don't seem to be able to locate anyone offering a fully trimmed headliner board (other than Porsche for a King's ransom)

Lots of companies providing fabric or suedecloth kits, but not sure that I would be able to fit it without creases.

Will investigate local trimming companies to get some quotes.
 
I have just had a mail from another member who has this problem. It seems that the 'foam' backing degrades over time and the whole lot just comes unstuck. It is a common problem as cars get older and there are plenty of YouTube videos on it. This is one of the most comprehensive in that it covers all the angle re dismantling and refitting.


Alternatively you might take it apart yourself and let someone else do the re-lining. Seems to me that the hardest part is getting the material to stick smoothly around the compound curves.

I was considering having a go myself, various kits are available online with either fabric, suedecloth or genuine alcantara.

There is even a seller on Ebay who offers 'pre-cut' options, with twin needle or diamond stitching, in matching or contrasting colours.

Currently has an offer on which makes them £150-£160 with free postage, you then need to obtain adhesive separately.

This morning I have spoken to three local companies (Lancashire) who do various types of car trimming.

Quotes range from £360 - £450, depending on whether I choose cloth or suedecloth, this includes them removing and refitting the headliner.

One possibility that I am considering is light grey / silver suedecloth instead of the black cloth that I have at present, might make the cabin feel a bit less claustrophobic ?

I think if I go down this route, I will also get the 'A' pillar plastic trims covered in the same material, so that the lighter colour runs from the top of the dashboard and over the door apertures.

Trimmer wants to take a look at how big a job the 'A' pillar covers are before his final quote.
 
It sounds like you have some good options there. The lighter colour woud be a nice feature and offer a bit of personalisation. It would make the task more of a satisfying upgrade rather than just a repair.
