Centre Lane Hoggers to be Fined!

When driving up to 90mph it is seldom that one can stay in the inside lane for more than a few seconds, as you will be closing fast on slower traffic, and will need to apply your brakes, as the middle lane may not be clear to re enter.
I prefer to leave 40-50 yds distance between my car and the one in front which allows others to overtake, if they wish,
and find one tends to use the brake pedal far less, thus improving fuel consumption and have been showing 31 Mpg on longer runs. I agree that many will overtake you and immediately slow down, and then one has to drop back but this action will hardly prolong your journey time.

One should not be driving at 90mph though, and especially if traffic conditions do not allow it. If you find yourself having to brake because lane 2 is not clear to re-enter, then that's poor planning and observation for the most part. Occasionally you'll get that when someone decides they need to make up for the size of their manhood and deliberately blocks you, but it's quite rare.

You don't need to leave 40-50 yards gap, you need to leave two seconds in dry conditions and increase to around four seconds in wet conditions. I'm sure that's what you meant, but the two second rule is a better way of judging it.

So reading through this thread, the rules are;

You go too fast and you get fined
You drive too far behind and get fined (lane hogging)
You drive too close and you get fined (tail gating)

Too right!! 5000m around Europe over two months and zero delays.... what should be an easy 1hr 45min for me turned into over three hours trying to avoid traffic!!!

Was not happy when home!!

I have a Freedom of Information request with Wiltshire Police at present -in fact, the answer is due any day now- on this very subject.
