Can someone help me with the chassis numbers here plz??

I can t seem to locate the actual chassis nubers of a Boxster 986 and a 987!![]
The windshield vin plate is not secure enough to identify a car...
Any help with photos from owners of the exact location would be greatly apreciated...

Under the bonnet - to the left of the battery compartment at the back of the scuttle panel should be a clear perspex 'window' to enable you to view the chassis plate.

Phil has a couple of more modern cars as well...

Chassis number is shown at the base of the windscreen (as you have seen), in the place Phil mentions, on a plate under the door striker on the drivers door side, and (on a 986) on the sticker under the bonnet. These should (obviously) ALL match the same sticker in the "Vehicle Identification" section in the Guarantee and Maintenance booklet (the one with the service stamps in).

I have found the stickers and plates but I am still looking for the place pmjt talks about!! I remember seeing the perspex window somewhere...
The 986 doesnt have a perpsex window right?? Where is it then?
Hey mark you have a boxster...?

In 2 months I will be leading a "team" from germany to greece with 5 cars: a boxster 986, a 987, a 911/996 turbo S, a 911/997 C4S cabrio and a cayman! We wouldnt want to cross europe with stolen exotic sportcars...[:-]
That is why I need the info, and why photos would help the identification of these cars!!
HELP ME!!! [:(]

The 986 Boxster does have a little plastic window, under the bonnet to the left of the battery cover as previously described.

I'll nip out to the garage later and try and get a picture for you - 996 and 986 location is the same. [:)]

Philip

I had the window on the 986, not sure there was anything below it, but then i didn't really bother with it being bought new.

Right - I've braved the arctic weather! Here are two pictures - the first shows the location generally and the other a close up of the window - you need to look 'through' the window to the chassis number stamped on the leading edge of the scuttle panel - as below:

It's worth mentioning that I have seen two cars where this chassis / VIN plate had been modified (stolen / ringed) - so IF you're after the ultimate in protection as you go across European borders, take the cars to an OPC and request they plug the car into the PST II - this will ALSO show you the chassis number the DME has burnt into it. Get a print out from the parts department of the OPC which will show the car as ordered and specified on the Porsche computer and then you've done all the cross checking you can.

Thank you very much philip for your pics and tips!![;)]
The fotos are from a 986 and i guess cayman should have it at the same place!![:-]
I ll keep looking for 996/997 911s...

P.S. Is that an orange 986 boxster? Never seen such color before!

The 996 and 986 have the same front ends, so the chassis plate is in the same place - sorry no desire to own a 997 so can't comment.

The car in the photo is my Guards Red 996 GT3. The colour is aweful as I've had to keep the cars inside due to the lousy weather we have up here []

Philip

I think the orange one is a GT3.
(ooops - took me too long to type - Phil beat me to it [:D])

In answer to your earlier question - yes I have a Boxster [:D]

Boxster 986, 996, GT3 etc all have the window in the same place.

I'm not sure about Boxster 987, 997, 997 GT3, Cayman - someone should be along shortly to confirm [8D]
If one of these has it then all the rest will - they are all the same forward of the windscreen.
I suspect it's the same as the 986/996 series cars.

.

The VIN plate in theCayman S is situated in almost the same place as the 986 Boxster, but you have to remove the plastic battery cover to see it. Remove the plastic cover that conceals the battery and look to the left of the battery - look carefully as it is doesn't stand out due to being painted the same colour as the car

This is probably the same for 987, 997, etc

Remove the plastic cover? Can it be removed without tools?
Are u sure about this RichP? Have you actually seen it?
Any pics that could help?

Don't know how to upload pictures - I always get a 'File too large' error.......

Anyway, definately can remove the plastic cover above the battery on a Cayman - I've just been out and done it (without tools - you simply turn the 2 thumbscrews, one either side). Hopefully, it will be the same on the other models you list!

Good luck

Ok thanks for the info RichP! [:)]
Hopefully a boxster987/911 997 or Cayman owner will upload the pictures...

Rich - if you want to email me through the forum, I'll reply then send me the pics - I'll upload them.

The best way is to sign up to Photobucket or Flickr and then post the link to the image.
