Cheap 944

and i thought i was doing well

lucky bu**er having a S2 at 18!!

Goes to show what ive always thought tho... my exs sister spent 8 grand on a clio... people dont realise how much of a car you can get for that money.

Price of a 2nd hand used clio you can get a lovely late 944, or for a new clio a 968!!

I think at the end of the day it can be a bit of a lottery. You might be able to pick up a car thats great to look at for £1500 but is a money pit under the bonnet. It also depends on how far you want to go with it. My car cost me just shy of 5k, but i dont want to think how much i've spent on it in the last year! But thats because i want it to look and feel like brand new. Some people may think its a waste of time and money on a car which is so old, but its personal prefrance at the end of the day. I dont think there is a real answer on how much to spend to buy a good one. it all depends on what you see that as being.

Yeah the ppl that go on about their new 911 only costing 900 quid a year really bug me. What they don't say is that this is just the warranty then add servicing etc. and its about the same as the cost to maintain a purely road driven 944 BUT what about the 5K to 10K depreciation year on year! For sure my S2 is probably worth no more then 5K now but I have had her 6 years and she only cost me 8K back then so the depreciation is rather irrelevant. Don't want to scare anyone by saying how much the bills add up to though...

I must say with the lux its not really cost anything to maintain it, the rollers and belts were done before i got it as well as a rebuilt head (my dad got the car from his friend so we know thats true) apart from servicing, i think its only needed a rear wiper motor, engine mount and the middle exhaust box, off the top of my head.

Its not mint, i think you lot would class the lux as scruffy, but its really just the paint that lets it down as i dont polish it enough, but its been ran everyday and never had a problem, been to france a few times too. Id class it as a good car, but i dont think its worth more than £1500, we paid £2000 when we first got it but we didnt know about 944's then so i think we paid too much.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/143233.htm looks like a _potentially_ good buy for around £1500... although it could be different in the flesh (suspect it is 140,000 but it has the novelety of aircon if it works).
Think you need to see a few and avoid a few potential pitfalls: clutches are supposed to be be very expensive; belts and a waterpump will cost a few hundred so best that's been done recently if possible; sills rust and are hundreds to replace/repair.
Suspect you might also under budget what is likely to be required yearly to keep them running in parts alone. For instance both mine have recently required discs, pads, shocks, second hand set of coils and struts, handbrake cables, etc. Mounts up, even at Eurocarparts prices.

Does look nice for £1600........ Must measure the drive, I reckon it would fit with a bit of juggling. [8|]

Seriously, that is the problem I had when I bought mine. I spoke to an awful lot of people who had cars for sale, and got to the stage where I decided that every one was criminaly dishonest. Most 944s will come up a treat in a picture with a good polish, and the lies people tell about the history etc. are unbelievable. The only thing you can do is to get to know the cars - come to any of the events and someone will talk you through a car and what to look for, and to look at lots with a really cold head on. Even find someone local to you who will come along and give an impartial view. It's very easy to part with what is not really a lot of money for a Porsche as soon as you see one, without considering the consequences...

On that basis I'd say you bought a really good one, and it's only lost £500 in depreciation? Try that with a modern car......[8|]

I had all expensive things such as belts replaced before I bought mine and Ive spent on repairs as needed but I think overall what with the fun of ownership and driving my 944 I dont think of the running costs too much.........Weigh up the alternatives for the price of a 944[8|][8|][8|]
