Cheap nav system

I bought a USB GPS Reciever - I hook this up to my (work bought) Laptop with Autoroute 2005. Tells me where I am, where I'm going, and follows me on the map, direction always pointing up! Tells me where to refuel, where all the cafes and restaurants are, as well as calculating my total journey time and cost.

POI's aplenty, and covers all of Europe - oh and I have the American Version (Streets and Trips) which means it will work in the US also - although taking a GPS reciever through US customs will no doubt automatically brand me as a terrorist!)

Total cost to me was £60. With the added advantage that you don't get some German or Posh Bird (sorry girls) that tells me where to go all the time[;)]

It could be a tad large to mount on the dashboard though. [;)]

With the amount of body work done to Carls car recently it wouldnt surprise me if it's welded to the bonnet and sprayed to match []

Play Nice [:D]

I've never used it in the 944 (never had the chance!)

But it fits very nicely in the BM if I open the glovebox, and rest it on the catch and a home made bracket (read cable clip!)

Screen is slightly bigger also (12"), so it's easier to read. Could also export the signal out to an in dash monitor if I had one (Alpine D310 springs to mind - now where's my compensation......)

I'm never one to do things the normal way - I don't like the idea of buying a ready built system - hence my seperates Hi-Fi, Seperates Dolby Digital setup, PC built from components, and extremely complex in-car stereo setups. Of course this isn't for everyone - more things to go wrong!

And before anybody mentions it, no I didn't aim to go for a seperates 944[]

Oh, and no - it doesn't fit on the dashboard!

Umm, Carl, tha's the problem with Autoroute. It doesn't "tell" you anything. You have to look at the screen! I do the same as you though, I have the laptop wired upto the datalogging too, but I'd certainly prefer to get something to go on my phone. Apparently there's new software out next month to turn my P910 into a GPS device. I can't wait!!

Version 5.1 is available as a free download from their website. If you would like me to email it then please let me have your email address.

Rgds,

Kevin

Version 5.1 of TomTom? I'd be interested in that if it's what you mean, to see if it's much different to v3. Does v5 work with the same maps? I have the whole of Europe and also USA & Canada for v3 and I wouldn't want to lose them.

Fen,

Also forgot to mention that you should of course always backup your TT or anything else for that matter before you perform an upgrade.

Rgds,

Kevin

I think a head up display would be good. Isn't it the Viper that has it's clocks projected on the windscreen.(shield)

Maybe Carl, you could turn your screen in the passenger seat to reflect up at the windscreen. Cool![8D]

But then er.. turn right when the display points left. Damn teething problems!

With a complex a complex system of mirrors, I think you may be on to something there!

All I need to do is work out how to fit the mirrors on to the dashboard..........
