Check engine yellow light and running rough.

Hello Jeff, just to update you and others. I switched the 2 solenoids from left bank to right bank and error codes switched banks. So not really knowing which of the two types was faulty, bought all 4. I could tell my looking at them they looked old. Tested ok on the 12v bench test but that appears not to be conclusive. Drivers side, easier if exhaust box is removed. Total time 60 minute. Passenger side, again with the wheel off but exhaust left in place was around 40 minutes. Should have bought new aluminium claps that have seals within but cleaned up old ones and all ok. 4 new Porsche solenoids £499 including VAT and postage. Car runs beautiful and no more error messages. Really appreciated the tip so thank you. As for fitting, fidly but straight forward. Just make sure you keep the solenoids in the same orientation as the connecting plugs will then go straight back on. Many thanks Adrian

Hi Adrian,

The error codes switching banks with the solenoids certainly looks as though one or both were the source of your problem. Fingers crossed that's you sorted (at last..!) and that you're now able to enjoy driving the car without the dreaded warning light appearing. Most probably all the solenoids are originals, so it's no bad thing replacing them all despite the significant expense.

Good luck..!

Jeff

Thanks to everyone. Mine goes to OPC tomorrow and I will certainly quiz them on the solenoid issue. Will update as soon as I know more.

Update. OPC couldn't diagnose beyond what my own equipment showed which was a surprise. I mentioned the solenoid issue detailed by others in this post and they then decided to switch the solenoids between bank 1 & 2. They then returned the car after clearing codes and said by the time I got home they would expect the CEL again but on bank 1. Sure enough after about 25 miles the CEL was on. I checked codes on my equipment and indeed the misfire had moved to bank 1 as others have detailed here.

Now waiting to hear from the warranty company/dealer( who have been very helpful) for final resolution action. Thanks to all.

Sounds like a result John. And it just goes to show that - unfortunately - sophisticated diagnostic systems aren't infallible, especially because so much reliance is placed upon them these days.

Hope you manage to get a successful outcome from your warranty company.

Jeff

Booked in at OPC for final repair to replace solenoid next week. Also replacing corroded heat shields covering coil packs at same time.

Well my 997 went in to OPC for the faulty varioram solenoid to be replaced on Thursday but on the way back home the CEL and visit workshop message was constantly coming up even worse than before and the car struggled to tick over with a big vibration. Stopped and phoned OPC who said bring it straight back. About an hour later they said the new solenoid was defective and they had fitted another one and were confident it was fixed. Drove home perfectly so it looks as if all ok now. Phew what a relief. Thanks to everyone who helped me out here including the dealer I purchased the car from 6 months ago who were very helpful - very grateful. John
