Choice of wheels

I managed to stumble across a second set of wheels for the cayman. Chuffed to bits that I have my favourite wheels in two colours. Amazing how different the car looks with each set. Satin platinum came with the car, gloss black Ive just picked up. Which do you like??

Mmm. Picture with the black didn’t upload for some reason. It’s in my avatar though. 👍

As you say -- we haven't seen the black yet; I thought you were away changing the wheels for a photo!

Oh wow! They are quite something. A very difficult choice but if I HAD to choose, I'd probably go for the black, surprisingly. Well done anyway.

It looks like you may be new to the club? Welcome and hope you enjoy your membership. Where are you based?

Many thanks Gordon.

I agree, I like them both, which is great as I can change them around as I feel like it. Somebody at work just mentioned he was selling them and the deal was done, pretty much for the cost of just the tyres, so I am happy.

Yes, new to the club. I've owned my Cayman for 2 years now and love it. My first Porsche after a long line of hot hatches. I thought I'd keep it a couple of years and have a hankering for a 911, but I can honestly say I've got no intention of changing it. I'm lucky that its a bit of a garage queen and weekend toy so it feels special each time I drive it. But when I drive it it gets driven properly!. I think if it gets changed for anything it'll be for a GT4 maybe. I'm Brighton based, so a little way from you!, but I fully intend to get to some events next year.

Hi Steve,

Have a look at comments former Cayman owners, who now have 911's, make about their Caymans! "Regrets, I have a few...tra la"

Yours looks like an 'S'? As you may see, I have a GTS and I have had the GT4 debate with myself a few times. I decided that unless I was going to do more track days, I was quite happy as I am. You'd need to get comments from GT4 owners about pure road use vs an S / GTS.

Ex-981 GTS owner here, now in a 718 GT4.

The GT4 is more hardcore/raw/direct/uncompromising etc etc. On the road the performance difference is unimportant as they're both more than fast enough. As a huge motorsport fan and ex-motorcyclist I swapped as I wanted that more raw feeling in a car rather than the softer more luxurious feeling I got from my GTS on the road. As it turns out I've started doing track days too now where the GT4 is obviously in its element.

So whether the change would suit you will depend what you want from your car....

Hi Gordon,

Yes, mines an S and I was lucky to find one with most options ticked. I have had exactly the same thoughts about the GT4. I want one because of what it is and how it looks. I will probably only do one track day a year, if that, and most of the time its just road use. My 'S' is PDK, and I know some will say manual is the only way forward, but I have really gelled with the PDK, especially teamed up with the PSE, its just incredible, so I'm not sure for day to day driving that I want a manual again. And then there is the jump in price - double, for the same age car. I struggle justifying that one. I have also toyed with a new GTS PDK.

Hi,

I think you hit the nail on the head. Money no object then a 718 GT4 PDK would be on the drive. I have a wife, kids and a house, so money is an object :ROFLMAO:

Get a better job then! [:D]:ROFLMAO:

Seriously though, I'd have been happy sticking with my GTS - the 981 platform is really, really good in all guises.

+ 1 for the black :p

Having come from a 981 Cayman S PDK to the 981 GT4 ... the more focused feel and feedback is well worth it. The GT4 communicates so much better.

Having had a brief passenger run in a 718 GT4 manual, my overall ideal would be a 981 GT4 with PDK [:)]

Thanks for the positive comments everyone, and for the input on the GT4 debate. Its good to have a forum that has active members.

Platinum for me. I had a 981CS with the same wheel but silver. I was considering having them painted platinum but it was almost the same as the agate paint and I thought too similar. Personally don't like the way you lose detail with black wheels.

I'd agree with the platinum but only from a maintenance perspective. Gloss black wheels mark too easily and having had them on a previous car, it drove my OCD bonkers. I would strongly suggest having them polished to remove any marring and then ceramic coat them.
