A good example could be the Club Championship, where the car to beat is the 968. It is quicker than equivalent 911's(964's) simply because it is the better handling car.

The final results do indeed show that over a season the 968s come out on top. However, the front row of the starting grids were regularly occupied by 964s and 993s which indicates that over a single lap they can be faster. It's also worth remembering that the 968 boys, Demetriou and McAleer, have consistently proved that they're best and most experienced racers in the class. A lot of the credit for the 968s being so quick has to go to those guys.

I remember reading Paul Frere saying that around the same track (which one I do not remember), he was actually faster in a 968 than in a 964 Carrera 2.

He was one of those who regretted the strategic underdevelopment of the 968 to promote the flagship 911.

There is no doubt at all that Porsche is doing just the same with the Cayman with respect to the 997.

Chris the simple answer to why buy the Cayman CS when you can have an older GT3 is that .......some people will always prefer to buy new! the second is that some people will not want a 911 layout. They are I think two different camps. Those that prefer the handling of a mid engine car and those that will always prefer the unique feel of the 911.
For those with short memories ....Please remember for a short period Porsche did make a mid engine 911 beater. So please don't say Porsche won't make one , they did ![8D] It was called the Carrera GT and was never going to threaten 911 sales[:D]
I for one am quite happy that Porsche have stayed with the 911 as it's premier vehicle. When it stops it will just become another mid engine sportscar maker[:(]

Agreed Laurence.

There is a tremendous amount for Porsche to be proud of with the 911 design --- but keeping it relevant and contemporaneous is a work !

I should also say that I think the new Gen2 3.8 997 GT3RS is a very nice car --- but I want the one Walter R drove to 22nd at the Nurburgring 24 hour [;)]

It wasn´t the 24h yet, it was a VLN race on the Nordschleife. The big teams use these races to sort things out for the big one in May. So, this was his first outing in this car. I think, there´s more to come in the 24 h race!

Maybe a top ten result? For sure, if it will rain and they´ll make it to the finish line.

Only just came across this discussion but I agree, Chris's article was excellent, can't help with any of the names though, sorry.
Melv, love the Cayman series pics, those hippy schemes look especially good (sorry, couldn't spell psycodelic). Wonder if Jude would notice if I removed a few creature comforts from her car.......[:D]
