Clay polishing

I have clay polished my 944 again and treated it with step 1,2 and 3 meguier polish.
I did it 12 months ago and Iam even more delighted with the results this time round. It is hard work but the results are well worth it.[8D]

Car looks really great - I have not clayed the car yet but as soon as the weather is a little better then this is first on my list.

A few questions if you don't mind......what did you use as a lubricant - diluted shampoo and water?

Also after the clay did you then rince off, dry and then use a cleaner product then a wax or what??? I planned on using a zymol cleaner then a zymol wax?

Thanks in advance for any advise...FB

Ive used Zymols waxes before and from what ive seen their waxes go down best on top of HD Cleanse, which is a bit expensive. Ive heard Zymols cleaner wax is poor though. A good site to look at is http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/ full of really useful info!

This was using Meguiars Kwik-Clay (approx £15 which is clay plus a rather nice smelling lube spray) followed by their paint cleaner (approx £12).

After claying it's very quick to use the paint clean and even faster to apply wax ~ I ran round it and stuck on a layer of Mothers Pure Carnauba in approx 20mins! If you don't use the paint cleaner then the clay lube leaves a residue which isn't removed by waxing.

That looks nice! I wish i could make mine look that smart! All i need is the weather to hold off for just 1 weekend......

The lubriant is from meguires and it comes with the clay bar.Start with 1 panel at a time, spray the lube and then use the clay bar.You will be suprised the amount of dirt that comes out of the paint. When you have gone around the whole car you can then start at the first panel with the polishing.
I used meguires polish treatment 1,2 and 3.
Really pleased with the final result[:)]

I have used the Meguiars clay before and their Deep Crystal three step process, all with good results on my silver BMW. I was going to use them again tomorrow on the S2, but I am away and forget to bring them. So I have ordered some Sonus clay and their paintwork cleanser, which has now arrived, so I'll try and take some before and afters, assuming the weather holds. This will be the first time since owning the car (three weeks) that'll I'll have cleaned it "properly" so let's hope it doesn't throw up any nasty surprises.

Lucky enough to have a dry area to work on the car. Process I used was

Wash car, rinse, dry etc etc.

Wack out the clay and warm it in your hands (used megs Gold Class Clay kit (Lube, Nice Microfibre, 2 Clay Bars) £20

Lubed panel and then clayed, then wiped off residue then went onto the next panel. A load of grey and yellow 'stuff' also great for removing rubber from rear arches, and tree sap/bugs from nose etc came off, paint then felt smooth as glass.

Wash again to get rid of that residue, rinse and dry, i use a trad chamois to dry. (I use AG shampoo due to availablity and price and find its fine tbh, some reccommend chem guys citrus wash and gloss)

Then I used AG Ultra Deep Shine £12 to polish the bodywork.
Then I used AG Extra Gloss Protection (£10) to seal the paintwork
Then I used DodoJuice Banana Armour, 2 Coats(£30)

Took about 2 days. Still havent really been able to take any decent pictures, always blimming wet at the weekend.!!

It certainly makes a difference though.

Echo the thoughts of detailing world, although the place is totally addictive (search youtube for miracle detail) and will eventually bring me into financial ruin.. already spent close to £150 on washing and detailing equipment, only had the car for five mins [:D]..

Cheers
Charlie

Claying is not polishing as it doesn't remove any paint [:)]

It does a great job of removing over spray, or on my car areas where I have used a touch up pen on a chip and over filled. The claying takes the edge of so in that respect it does remove paint and I have seen plenty of colour on the clay and runing of the car.

Nice just how bright the paint looks after claying.

Use of an orbital polisher is addictive though, I can feel the urge to get mine out again when the weather gets better.

Interesting Neil ~ I've always marvelled at how smoothe the paint feels afterwards despite the fact I see no paint transfer to the clay ~ just "dirt n stuff".

Thats the experience that I had...still got paint on me car[;)]

When I clay my guards red 944, I see some paint on the clay as well as dirt. If you see no paint transfer on the clay its possible the paint on your car is clear coat over base. Clear coat on the clay will not be visible on the clay.

I used to own a red car that was great when polished and I would have red on my polish cloths after every polish...although I never used a clay bar on it.

Older solid colour cars do not have a clear laquer on top of the paint so every time you use a genuine polish you are removing the top layer of colour. Eventually (a long time unless you have biceps like Popeye [:D]) you will remove all the colour and end up with a patch of primer []

Polish is an abrasive that removes the top surface, Wax is a glaze sealant that you put on top. You should polish very sparingly but wax regularly to prolong the life, colour and sheen of the surface.

Clay is designed to gently nip off any contaminants that are sitting on top of the surface and shouldn't really be removing paint. Any colouration is hopefully just some residue from the last wax/polish

I tend to clay in the January once a year and then keep the polish topped up throughout the year for great results.[:)]Although I may check my paint tomorrow[:D]

I hope you mean you keep the wax topped up

Remember polish is an abrasive and does not protect the paint. Wax does

[pedant alert off] [:D]
