Clay polishing

Right, sorry chaps, left my digital camera back at home so there's been a delay in getting these photos up. Here are my claying efforts just over a week ago. I decided to start anew with products from Sonus as I have tried the Meguiars stuff before and fancied a change. Here's the products that I used, all purchased from www.cleanyourcar.co.uk.

The car, as it was after being driven to my parents' place. They live near a forest, can you tell?

So after rinsing with a Karcher, and washing with some Gold Class and the two bucket method and drying with the new Sonus drying towel, here is what I have. Already very shiny [;)]

I then set to it with the Sonus green clay and their Glyde lubricant, which by the way, doesn't smell as nice as Meguiars Quik Detailer, but is fine nonetheless. Here's what the bar looked like after doing just the roof:

Once done, I then went round and did each panel individually using Sonus Paint Cleanser and the supplied applicator pad, which helped masked some swirling that I had picked up. Then I buffed it all back using the Sonus buffing towel and here's the level of shine I managed to attain (must attend to the rust appearing in that wheelarch though)

And a final shot to show the overall effect.

In the end it took about 5 hours, to rinse, wash, dry, clay and then paint cleanse. I really wanted to add a final coat of wax but I didn't have any with me and I am still in two minds what to get to go over these Sonus products. I am very pleased with the results, even at without that final layer of protection though. There are a few bodywork issues still to attend to, but a shiny car always puts a smile on my face.

I couldn't really perceive a difference between the Sonus products and the Meguiars Quik Clay with their version of Paint Cleanser, except as mentioned, the latter smells nicer. I would however recommend the use of a microfibre drying and buffing towel, these definitely make life easier.

Cheers and thanks for looking

Nice work James, proves that when clean Black is definately the best colour [;)]

Did you have to drive home past that muddy forest you mentioned []

I wouldn't leave it too long before waxing the car, as the work you've done, great result though it is, has left the car with no wax protection on its paint work. I'd say use a Carnauba wax. They work pretty well and are easy to apply.

As you're thinking of getting some paint work done, dont use a sillicone polish such as Auto glym Super resin. It can react with the fresh paint giving the dreaded "fish eye".

Thanks guys. It's been safely tucked up in the garage since I finished while I concentrated on fixing the other car. So when I wheel it out next weekend I will give it a rinse down and then apply some wax. Just need to decide what to buy from the hundreds of choices out there.
