Just a thought about closing the 997 section of the forum to members of PCGB only. Many other sections are closed to views/posts by non-members, and I wanted to cavas your views. Please vote on the buttons and then post comments below as usual.

Thanks

Rob

As I am a non-paying participant of several other forums I could only vote no.

Leaving the forum open means we benefit from a greater breadth of opinions/knowledge and it might just attract a few new members down the line.

As a new PCGB member I would say leave it open for a period of time if possible, say 2 months...like a trial period.

I joined PCGB by finding out about it via this forum and being encouraged to join by other members within actual posts.

Before I vote; what is the rational behind closing this to members only?
In principle, I would prefer to leave this open, but perhaps I am only seeing one side of the story. The fact that others do it, does not make it necessarily correct for me.

I have voted no, as forums, especially model specific ones should encourage people to browse for information when purchasing a vehicle - hopefully they will join up the club and register once they have taken the plunge.

On other forums, locked down sections tend to be members area / lounge bars / off topic forums. Any chance of a 997 members sub forum for chit chat and open viewing on the more technical side?

If we leave it open then we need strong moderation. I would not like to see us get vitirolic comments like you you see on some of the other open Porsche forums. I value other views even if they are different to mine and all views need to be respected. For example how could Yves consider selling his car?

Difficult one

Leaving it open allows potential new members and buyers to view the threads and gain some insight into 997 ownership. But it does require heavy moderation to ensure fairness, openness and an absence of the wrong kind of input (bad lanugauge or overly vitiriollic critisism) - on that basis I am with BobFair

So my prefrence is for it to be open to help members of the public who might want to join, however if the moderation work is becoming too ownerous for Robert and Gary I'd rather we had it closed to members only than have the site degenerate.

As you are all aware the forum is open to everyone at the moment.
Maybe we have been lucky but I don't believe that we've had that many abusive comments here in need of moderation.
Whilst closed it can perhaps open up more free speech amongst the members but I also agree that with it being open new people can get information and find the forum a benefit prior to hopefully becoming members of the club (research).
I for one watched this forum prior to joining the club and at that time the forum was nowhere near as good as what it is now.
I should imagine most abuse would come from trolls like the one in the Boxster forum.
However thats their area to police as they wish, I'd like to think that your all pretty happy with the way this area is moderated..

Assuming you don't mean me...[;)] one troll in all these years isn't too bad.
He's banned now - and didn't last that long anyway.

No Mark, not yourself.. I'd never call you that to your face [;)]
Yes were on about the same one...

As Mark says we tend not to get too many

I've been reading and contributing to this register since it started and to be honest there hasn't been any reason that I can see for non members to be excluded. Of course I am unaware if our dearly beloved moderators have had to intervene much along the way but from what Gary says that sounds unlikely.

I agree it's useful for people considering buying into the brand/model as we can often offer advice borne out of experience of ownership.

Difficult choice but I'm inclined to agree with the third option namely public access to some areas but not to others - hence the need to be a member for the extra benefits!
An alternative may be to let non members view perhaps the initial question but only the first or second response and not the whole thread!

Andy, nice idea, but I believe that would be down to the workings of the Forum itself and Admin.

A question that can at least be asked...
Maybe if and when the new Forum setup comes along something that can be implemented

Thanks All for your comments. I've taken them all on board, and the poll result, and it's clear that you all agree its good to keep it open to non-members for their input and research, and that sometimes these guys end-up joining the club too which is good for all.

However in the best tradition of this government I'm going to ignore you and close it anyway, and then tax you on your memberships for the privilege of using the forum ! [;)]

(That bit is a joke - it will stay open !)

Hello Derek,
I think it was closing it to non members rather than people with other models.
We could end up with loads of seperate little fora for each model and region!

Cheers,

Fred is correct Derek, members/non members not registers

As Rob has said, it has been decided to indeed leave it open for the foreseeable future with the option of a members only section within the forum area.
Mainly for details that perhaps are of interest and benefit to "members", like the lowdown and information gained from the PC Reading visit...
