Clutch slave cylinder upgrade

As mentioned in my other post (Braunton Engineering), I have just had the clutch slave cylinder on my 993 replaced with this:
porsche_2009_eng.pdf

The difference is remarkable. The clutch pedal action is much lighter, smoother and more uptake is more progressive. Feels like a different car. Stop-go traffic and reversing on a hill are greatly improved.

I've seen them for sale on e-bay, but I couldn't find one when searching just now. Cost £175.

None so far, unless you particularly like the "manly" original clutch feel ! It does take a bit of getting used to. Every time I reverse out of the garage I think, "that's different".

Thanks for the feedback. Am seriously tempted. Don't usually drive my 993 in traffic but the once or twice that I've had to, I find myself disliking the whole driving experience.

Couple of additional qs:

1- my car hasn't done many miles and the clutch doesn't need replacing yet. If I have the mpl slave cylinder installed, should I change the clutch anyway ? Anything else that is worth replacing / doing / checking while the mpl cylinder is being installed ?

2- the mpl online shop is only in german - shall I call them to order or do they have a UK distributor ?

Thanks!

No need to change the clutch. The slave cylinder is in the footwell, easily accessible, supposed to be ~1hr to fit but I would imagine it's only easy if you have done it before. The guys at Braunton sourced it for me, so you could give them a ring.

This is mpl's e-bay shop:
MPL-tuning
but no Porsche parts at the moment, for some reason. There was last time I looked.

Great, thanks. Really appreciate the feedback. Must admit I'm kinda jealous. Would rather be living in range of Braunton (or even where you're moving to for that matter!) but work means we need to be based beat the London area.

Am lucky to have some great people looking after the 993 so will see if I can get the part ordered as it's about to have it's annual service (so can be fitted at the same time).

Thanks again and best wishes for the move.

At the risk of being a little pedantic, the SLAVE cylinder - the part we're talking about here - is mounted atop the bell housing where it operates the clutch mechanism. The MASTER cylinder is the bit that's down by the pedal.

Regards

Dave

Not pedantic at all, I was a bit worried I'd got that wrong after posting [:)] Was hoping no one would notice !

Thanks for the clarifications. Spoke to MPL in germany - bit frustrating as they don't think they'll have stock for another 3 weeks or so...

In case anyone is interested in a group buy, let me know!

I'd be interested in a group buy. I've also been in touch with MPL by email and they're predicting availability by mid-November and a price per unit of €180 (about £160) including postage. I presume this includes VAT but I would want to confirm that.

regards
Nick

Sounds like a really good idea, especially as the old left knee is giving me a bit of gip, and the heavy clutch pedal is hardly helping. Can't really justify fitting a new master cylinder at the moment, as I had a new one a couple of years ago. Pedal still hangs a bit though, occasionally.

I've watched these for a while. They have a Buy It Now for £176 but also run regular auctions, which can sell as low as £58. I'll keep watching the auctions...............

Well, I think you're all pathetic Pommie wimps .. !! .. ;-)

Go and do some weight training on those calf muscles - all these things are just compromising the factory package experience .. !

cheers, Maurice [:D]

Yes, unfortunately we're all getting a bit older, and my knee ligaments are certainly not what they were. [;)] Are you upgrading to something equally manly Maurice ?

wow - hadn't realised they had gone so cheap. Is that the same MPL tuning ones ?

I understand that whilst our slave cylinders do not take long to replace, access to them is extremely limited with little visibility, so it's not a job for the faint hearted.

Is the ebay version any better than replacing with a new OEM part?

I for one hate heavy clutch pedals. They seem so unnecessary, yet they are a feature of several new cars such as the 997 GT3 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage. It's nearly bad enough to make you want to buy an auto.

I'm up for a group buy as well.

Hi Leo, consensus seems to be that the original poster was referring to the master cylinder, which is a little easier to get at. (It's behind the pedal board). I think he corrected himself if you read the posts above.

Cheers

Mark
