Much worse on a turbo as the exhaust manifold gets in the way (the turbo is on the intake side). You have to drop the gearbox back which apparently isn't too bad, I haven't tried it myself, then remove the torque tube - good opportunity to check condition of the bearings- then AFAIK its like any other car.
Should ask though Is it the clutch plate or the hydraulics? (above assumes plate)

I bought this car with "a clutch problem" amongst other things i.e. busted ignition switch, been hot wiring it to getting it running but as it's in a confined space was unable to hot wire it in gear. Managed to do that tonite and the car jerked forward suggesting the clutch is engaged, whilst this dosen't rule out a clutch problem I'm going to work through the whole system before plunging in with a clutch replacement, somethings broke somewhere!

There are available on e-bay and similar, workshop manuals on CD, whilst not wishing to encourage piracy (but unfortunately Porsche only supply paper manuals at much greater cost) they might be usefull if you have to take the car apart,

Another stroke of luck, phoned a good friend of mine who's a mechanic to tell him about the car and he reminded me that he did his apprenticship at Bauer Millet in Manchester! he's spent a good few hours working on various Porches including doing a clutch on a 944 so offered his help, maybe next time we're having a pint I'll wait till he's well oiled and try and talk him into doing the job with me in his HUGE garage with access to his big Snap on tool box (he has offered to loan me any odd tools I might need like a 6 point 8mm socket for the clutch bolts!)

Costs of £650 - £1000, including parts, when carried out by an independant from memory.
Which parts do you include in a typical clutch job ?
A couple of months ago I had mine replaced at an independent : £800 in parts + £500 in labour (14 hrs).

I think 8 hours just for the clutch is about fair but how do the dealers or specialist charge 14 - 16 hours [:'(] (unless it's 7 - 8 hours x 2 technicians ?)
BTW I paid £285 for the clutch kit plus the dreaded.

It's not out of the realms of the DIY mechanic, it's just a case of allowing a couple of days and being able to support the gearbox and torque tube when you lower them. There are a few online guidesto teh whole processon the web. Try www.clarks-garage.com for one of them
