Cockpit temp sensor fan motor

Great write-up Rob, I've just been outside and done mine! Looks like somebody might have been in there before me and I didn't find too much fluff. The facia popped off mine very easily, the warning regarding the ribbon cable was well headed.

It's this sort of thing that makes being part of the club and a forum user worth the membership!

I think fluff accumulation is variable and may depend on a number of factors. My intake seems to get clogged every 50,000 miles or so. I would be interested to see some comparative data on this.
 
What little fluff there was on mine was on the intake side of the sensor, I suspect that carefull use of the Dyson would prevent the need for removal of the unit at all.
 
Hi Rob, would you know where the rubber pipe leads to from the CCU unit? My stereo install was done around the time that my aircon stopped working. I guess it may be coincidence but then again.....

David, the rubber pipe is within the CCU and fits between the facia plate (into which the temp sensor is mounted) and the fan on the rear (a unit about the size of your palm). Might be worth removing the CCU to ensure the electrical connectors on the back haven't been disturbed.
 
I cleaned my sensor at the weekend - it looked like the entire contents of a vacuum cleaner bag had been emptied around it (OK so a little bit of an exaggeration). Just need to take a long drive to check its working properly. First impresssion though, on a short drive with the dial to 20'C, the blower temp warmed nicely rather than going straight to furnace-like as it used to.

I spent yesterday evening methodically going through the operation of my heater (the aircon will be tackled later). Started with the rear blower which works just as it should (i.e. doesn't run when temp on blue dot, goes to full speed when fan is set to 2 or above etc, etc).

Then I looked at the cabin airflow. The air coming from the right side is noticeably stronger than that on the left. When I close the right side vents the left side flow becomes stronger (presume the 2 sides are linked and this is right side air coming through the left as well). Touching the housings of the fans in the boot, both seem to be vibrating so I guess both are working.

Is it normal to have one side stronger than the other? Is there a way of disconnecting the power to each fan in turn to double check that the left side is working?

Before I went to bed I shone a torch into the little internal temp sensor grill on the end of the CCU unit. Looks very fluffy in there. Can I just use a hoover nozzle on it to see if it clears it or is there sensitive stuff behind it that could be damaged?

It may be the motorised flap in the ductwork that's not working David. If you turn the ignition on and, after the brake pump has stopped charging, turn the temperature dial up from cold you should hear the motors (one in each cill, just forward of the A post) coming on for a few seconds. Moving your ear down to each one and turning the temp dial up and down you should be able hear if they are working.

A new motor is around £125 if I remember correctly, so this is a very good buy at the moment [8|]. It's an easy fix but re-attaching the flexible pipe can be a bit awkward.

 
Put the hoover's narrow nozzle on and gave it full beans on the CCU temp sensor grill. Looks like all the fluff has now gone from within and the temp control responds like it should do! Now I just need to investigate the light airflow on the left hand side before I tackle the aircon....
