It's me again,
I just had a quick refresher course from my workshop manual.
The auxiliarey air regulator when cold will have a visible clear hole through it i.e. you can see through it one side to the other. When you start up electrical energy will slowly close it, so to put this thread to bed have a look at the item in your hand and see if you have a hole through it, if it does then at least this is correct. If you then connect the wiring harness to it and turn on the ignition, I would not start the engine, in a while if the bi metal strip heats up the valve will close. If this happens then this part of your start up issues will be OK.
