Connecting battery conditioners

The CTEK battery conditioner comes with a small wiring harness to facilitate permanent connection. However the holes in the wiring terminals are to small to fit directly onto the battery clamp bolts. Before I try drilling them out to a larger size has anyone found an alternative location for the permanent connection?[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"] There is an earth point just above the battery but no obvious live points[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

I carefully drilled out the connectors with no problems.

As the drilled connectors are quite 'delicate' I piggybacked them against the existing battery terminal nuts and added a second nut to secure them. The other end of the short harness can be easily threaded into the luggage area for easy and quick connection to the charger.

Don't forget to manually close the hood latch to extinguish the boot light and to release it again after disconnecting the charger.

I didn't drill them I just cut them with wire cutters so the hoop could be opened to the required width for the bolts. Once pinched in place it makes no difference to the operation.

Drilled mine out just enough to make them fit, no problems in the last couple of years

I'm sure mine fitted OK - must have been lucky! I did extend the cable and routed it out via the wheelarch to behind the numberplate, fixed with velcro though: really convenient and quick to use! 'added an in-line fuse for safety's sake too.

just another question about the ctek conditioner-

i tried using the cigarette lighter route whilst i snipped and sorted the other way-and whilst the light came on on the unit indicating it was receiving current ,when plugged into the cigarette socket the upper row of lights didnt come on-does this mean there is a fault with the cigrette socket??or is there a lag time between plugging in and the upper lights coming on

No delay on mine - i'm using the ciggy lighter socket next to the handbrake (under the flap) - this is the only one you should use on 9x7 cars, as the others have lower current rating.

Hi, the lighter socket is only live on a 993 with the ignition switched on, you will need to rewire the socket to a permanent live supply if you want to charge the battery thru it, its quite a simple job.but as it sounds like your soon going to hard wire your ctek charger straight to the battery, I would just do that, as its the easier of the two jobs.but its up to you, hope that helps, cheers
 
For future reference, CTEK produce connections with larger holes for a couple of £'s. Suggest anyone ordering a new charger talks to the shop so the correct size is supplied.
 
useful for anyone doing this-i have managed now but wouldve been much easier with bigger holes!!

Hi Dylan,

A quick question as I am a little confused.

You wired the eyelet connectors to the battery (using the snip method). Why do you also need to plug the cigarette lighter socket in - surely the CTEK is plugged into the Mains socket, that is one end to the battery (via eyelets) and the other end to the mains - where does the cigarette lighter come into play ?
 
Is it safe to connect up the CTEK and store it in the front luggagecompartment with the bonnet shut and the car covered up with a car cover ?
 
the cigarette lighter socket method was going to be instead of the bother of battery connections with the small eyelets-once i was informed(by friends on this forum)[:)])that the 993 cig lighter doesnt work without ignition on,i went with the eyelet battery route



which works fine.....but the interior lights came on and have stayed on-not sure why???

any help please??

If you are not closing the luggage lid fully it could be this that's causing the lights to stay on.

If it's like mine, if the engine and luggage lids are not closed fully the lights stay on; also, the alarm activates shortly after I arm it.

Try closing the luggage lid (carefully) with the lead to the conditioner clamped between the two rubbers on the lid and body. There should be enough 'give' in both to allow you to do this. I use this method now as did the previous owner; I believe he does this on his 996 too so it must be OK :eek:)
