I had a ZMCoupe before my latest 944 - it was an absolute joy, that straight 6 is a fabulous engine. Not without it's problems though, as Tony suggests. The S50 engines are prone to regular failings of the vanos unit, the S54 is vulnerable to an occasional terminal problem. I can't remember what it was exactly, but the S54 in M3 was subject to a recall, but BMW in their infinite wisdom refused to extend the recall to the ZMCoupe, even though it's the same engine. BMW were also massively increasing the cost of their extended warranty, which pissed off many owners.
It was great fun but i must say I prefer the 944, it's a more complete and grown up car, that can be a hooligan when it wants to. There is no comparison in build quality, the Porsche is so solid and well made when compared to the tinny feel of the coupe. And at the end of the day, I could have bought 2 of my current 944's for the price I sold it for, and i got a good 'un []
