8J/9J refers to the width of the wheel in inches.
If you get a staggered set of 8 & 9 then put the wider ones at the back. There is a school of thought that 8J front and back with a 225/45/R17 tyre is a good neutral handling setup, especially on an S2 where they don't have the need for wider rear tyres due to the lower power output
