Cup alloys

A pal is offering me 17" Porsche cup alloys in good condition - he had them from new on an Audi S2 so I'm not sure which Porsche model they were originally intended for but assume 911? Anyone know if they'll fit my 944 Turbo SE?? It will reduce the width of the rears to 225 from 245 but as I intend to use them as track-day wheels specifically I thought this might even be an improvement?? I believe earlier turbo's had 225 on the rear? With 45% profile tyres the rolling-radius is not much different so if the offset is OK for the 944, what would be a fair price? They have part worn Bridgestone SO2 tyres.

BTW I'm booked for Bedford on the 28th - anyone else?

I don't know if the Audi RS2 Cups are the same size as the Porsche ones, but if they are genuine Porsche they should have the width of the wheels and the offset stamped either side of the valve. Genuine Cup 1's should be:

7.5 inches front, offset 65 tyre 225/45 X 17
9 inches rear, offset 55 tyre 255/40 X 17

and they will fit, as I have had them on both my cars.

I be working, so glad I didn't book after all - although disapointed I whon't be there obviously. There again, if I had booked I could have sold my spot to Paul.

Thanks for info - I'll check whether they are stamped. I've only seen one so far and didn't know to look. Apparently all 4 are the same width - would this be a mistake on an SE do you think? I thought the other turbo's had same size front and rear - do you know if they changed the suspension on the SE for wider rears?

If wheels are genuine - any thoughts on what I should pay for them?

Re Bedford - my reg is G 153 UDM. I'll be the one pottering round trying to learn how to drive a turbo. Recent ex-911SC owner. Used to spinning off in that - last time at Goodwood - wrist slapped by the great Dickie Attwood himself!

Don't know through out the range but, for the 1988 model year, wheel sizes were:-

924S 6J x 15 all round with 195/65 tyres

944 7J x 15 all round with 195/65 tyres

944S 7J x 15 ditto ditto

Turbo 7J x16 front 205/55 tyres
8J x 16 rear 225/50 tyres

IIRC the Turbo SE went up to 7" fronts with 9" rears.

It would seem that all Turbos, certainly 250's had wider back wheels. Knowing how difficult it is to get the back to stick I certainly wouldn't want to consider narrower rears.

All turbos had wider rears, 7" & 8" for the 220 and 7.5" and 9" for the 250's IIRC

For the track I want a pair of 9" D90's for the back. I will use the 8" rears from my cab on the front. I want to run 17" Cup 1's on the road, but with the 255 section rears (9" again IIRC).

Definitely all the Turbos had wider rears.

However one of the 944 trackday regulars uses 245/45 track tyres (P Zero C's) front and rear so they will fit. Someone also made the mistake of putting his rear 255 17" tyres on the front and his 225 17" on the rear after a tiring trackday [:-] They fitted fine and he drove 30 miles home.

What I'm saying is they will fit, but I think you would have too much grip at the front compared to the rear, and may oversteer a bit too much (maybe that will bring back memories of your SC [

I have 255's on 9" rims at the back of mine. They have a 55mm offset and fill the arches a treat.

The fronts are 7" with 205's (the wheels are ex 911 or Boxster) which are a little wanting, though with the back snaking about all over the place a bit of initial understeer doesn't hurt. [8|]
