Cups, Corsas or SSRs?

Having always used S02's on my RS it's now time to move onto a more track orientated tyre.

I'm looking at Corsa's, Cup's and the Dunlop SSR.

Car does around 6-8 days on track a year including Spa and the Ring and always will be driven
to the track and when I need a fix at the weekend.

I'm tempted by the SSR's as they are at least half the price of the other two but only available
in 245/40/17 on the rear, rather than the standard 255/40/17.

Are the Corsas/Cups worth twice as much money for the correct size?

Many thanks in advance,
Paul

I fitted Dunlop SSR's to my RS after using Pirelli PZero road tyres for a few months. The Dunlop's are so progressive they are great, you can feel the car starting to loose grip long before it becomes a real problem and at Spa in May they were fantastic.

There is no problem with running the 245/40's at the rear as they are the same width as a 255 anyway. The 215/45 up front are fine too.

They have my vote, and at half the price of the others they are great value.

Ollie,

Thanks for the positive feedback on the SSR's I was actually thinking of the 225's upfront?

Johnny,

Just spoke to Mr.Tyre in Birmingham, plenty of 17" SSR's left, just the 18" which are getting thin on the ground, but Dunlop are planning to make somemore.

For outright grip I don't think you can beat the MPSCs - I have these and they are excellent. They are not however good in standing water, progressive or long lasting. I recently drove a car on SSRs and they were definitely more progressive but had nothing like the grip of the Michelins. They felt more like a road tyre and the performance was more like one.

Jimbo went from SO2s to the Corsas and found them to be a revelation. Probably the best all rounder of the bunch but not cheap (I was quoted 700 for a set fitted).

Try them and decide which you like.

Yoda,

A set of SSR's is just south of £500 including fitting, I think I'd pay an extra £200 for Corsas.

However £700 for a set of Corsas, that seems cheap (does that include the VAT) - where was that from?

Thanks,
Paul

My SSR's were £380 for the set when I bought them in May, so Dunlop must be putting prices up as they know they are on to a winner.

The grip level from the SSR is far higher than a normal "road" tyre, especially when they are nice and hot, I am sure there is a performance advantage with the MPSC's or the Corsa's but pound for pound they are a great buy.

There was a tyre test in Circuit Driver magazine a few issues ago where they tested a range of the track day tyres on a 968 ClubSport, and the Dunlop was almost identical (in terms of times, lateral grip, cornering speed etc) in performance with the Michelin's, and interestingly they stated that the car went home that evening on a new set of SSR's rather than any of the competitors tyres.

When I was ringing around for prices on the Pirelli Corsa's I was getting quotes in the late hundreds to early thousands fitted.

If I could have got the Corsa's for £700 I think that would have been my number one choice, and if the price checks out I know where I will be going next.

Interesting stuff. I remember that Circuit Driver article.

I have tried SSRs and Pirelli Corsas back to back on the Porsche Club track day at Donington recently. (The tyre lorry was there to change your tyres for you and I was using the Corsas in the afternoon). It was a dry day. I found the Corsas to be only slightly more grippy than the SSRs and not worth the extra £400 they cost (in the case of 18" wheels). I'll be trying Cups next I think, but I am wary about what they will be like in standing water. I'll be careful I guess. For my 18" wheels the Cups were only about £850-870 I think whereas I paid £825 for the Corsas. From memory my SSRs from Mr Tyre were only £450 inluding VAT and delivery.

Prices are as follows - all 17" and include VAT

         &nbspEach     Pair     Pair
SSRS
215/45 101.05 202.10
225/45 111.63 223.26
245/40 118.68 237.36 237.36
&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp439.46 460.62

CORSAS
205/50 168.38 336.76
225/45 177.04 354.08
255/40 198.01 396.02 396.02
&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp732.78 750.10

I've rulled Cups out as I don't fancy drving back from Spa/Ring on Belgium roads in the rain - it's bad enough on S02's.

So are Corsa's worth £300 more than SSR's....?

Tough choice...

In the wet the Dunlop's perform very well, the fronts provide plenty of grip if you are careful and the rears are fine unless you boot it (good fun though).

I am very pleased with the Dunlop's and at nearly half price I know I can afford to knacker a set on track days and get another set for the same price as one set of the rivals.

If you are near Leicestershire I would be more than happy to demonstrate the SSR's to you.

I ve tried to keep out of this or people may think i work for Dunlop! But bangs for ur buck Dunlop ............on its own , though i think Johnny got a good deal on his Corsa , not my specialist subjct, but think they re are some cheap deals out there now .
Calum Lockie reckoned on a 968 sport at Donni les than a couple of secs a lap Cup Sports /Dunlops ..................not up to his standards/ on 18" still the best all round compromise to get there and back and cope with English Climate ............2 days at Spa in May 500 plus BHP GT2 Dunlops looked fine, very little used and i was having fun out of La Source etc , even though it was hot , wud ave luvved cup sports in the conditions but at £1000 plus against abt £400 .....................sorry no brainer, satisfaction all round ,lets be honest these are track days we re doing not setting world lap soeed record s!

Vic,

My thoughts exactly track days are fun not lap time competitions, 2 sets of SSR's for alittle more than Corsas.

So that just begs the question 215 or 225 up front. Wider = better turnin and bigger arm muscles needed when manoeuvring.

Ollie,

Another RS in Leicestershire! I'm Northants/Leics border - just outside Kettering - I've heard rumours of Red RS living in Medbourne not you is it?

Paul

Dunlop's it is then [:D] Cannot comment on 225's up front, but the 215's are fine. The turn-in on my car (running fairly aggressive camber) is fantastic, no scrub or understeer at all.

My RHD car has sissy power steering so I am fine with my waife like arms.

I am in Market Harborough, so only 20 mins from Kettering.

Email me if you fancy a run one evening, I might be able to convince my brother in law to come in his 911 ClubSport as well.

Email is ollieATfireboxcreate.com

Ollie,

I seem to spend more time in Harborough than in Kettering, always driving through it, at homebase or taking the kids to the Leisure centre and I've never seen your RS.

I'd be well up for a meet one evening, plenty of good pubs to choose from. My RS is off to 9M this thursday and won't be back for a couple of weeks (logistics of getting it back from Warrington take a bit of planning!).

How much camber are you running at the front? Geometry and corner weighting is on the 9M to do list.

I cannot confirm the settings on the car as the previous owner set it up with his mechanic in Norfolk, and looking through all of the paperwork it was classified as a "mild race set-up".

I am getting the readings off the car as I am swapping the suspension for new units when funds allow, so I will know then.

I think I have seen your car a few times in Harborough, but mine generally is tucked up in the garage for the majority of the week and most weekends :-(

When you get your car back from Colin we must get a run sorted.

What are 9M doing?

Ollie

Ollie,

I'll speak to 9M about a more aggressive set-up as I'm getting far to much understeer at the moment with heavily worn S02's, I'm hoping SSR's and some more camber will sort the problem out.

9M are doing a service, geometry, corner weighting and power test - basically the cars annual check etc.

I'll drop you a quick email from home tonight and when I get my car back we can sort a meet.

Cheers,
Paul

Soft Southerner , around St Albans, 993 s speed yellow rsr and Audi rs blue GT2, 2.4 s nice quiet Blut Orange .........just finishing 12 month refurb.............wish i lived neare Warrington for obvious reasons !
I f u find urself further South know lots of curry houses pubs and people of similar interests!!!!!!!!

Paul

Look forward to it.

I have my car serviced in Leicester at GCR Racing.

Chris is an oracle of information on air cooled porsche's and he runs loads of cars on behalf of clients in the Porsche Open championship.

He's a bit closer than Warrington.

Ollie,

Never knew about GCR racing, I've used Motorwerk in the past.

I've had my car since 2001 and always had it looked after by 9M - top bunch of blokes and whilst Warrington appears to be way up North, in reality its only 2 hours away and theres a direct train back to Rugby.

Vic,

Your obviously a true scolar of all things 911, I've never had the fortune to meet you at a track but have been blown away by your GT2 comrades JC and RG many atime!!

Paul
