Cups, Corsas or SSRs?

For those who are interested, the best prices I found for track tyres when I was looking for my RS were Steve @ Jaz for Michelins (858 inc fitting and VAT) and Ian/Anthony @ Silverline for Corsas (700 inc fitting and VAT).

I did look into the Dunlops but decided that as the sizes were not exactly right I would pass. Agree they are excellent value for money and people who use them are very happy with them. Hard to describe what is different about the MPSCs but they do fee very different to Dunlops. For the price difference, I would certainly try a different tyre and I think at 700 the Corsas are a very good bet and exactly the right size. I was ready to switch to Corsas but managed to buy a set of new MPSCs for a ridiculously low price (wish I could get them that cheap all the time - working on it!!) so stuck with them.

I also completely agree it is not about lap times, but I think the feel of the car is very difefrent and as important a part of the experience as the right set up or a few extra BHP. If you have a spare set of wheels, I think one of them has to be shod with MPSCs.

Ollie - have you noticed any problems running the different size Dunlops? Wasn't sure how it would affect the car but I guess if it set up with them in mind then it will be fine. 380 for the Dunlops was a stunning price, no wonder you went for them.

Thanks for the details on the Corsa's, I might try a set when the SSR's are through.

I have done about two thousand miles on the SSR's (including Spa Porsche weekend and the Ring), and to be honest I have not noticed any adverse effects of running slightly different tyre sizes on the car.

The 245/40's at the rear have exactly the same cross section width as the 255's that came off the car, and the fronts are only slightly wider than the 205's that were there originally. In terms of grip levels etc they are far superior than anything I have had in the past on any of my cars.

I was told that the tyres were within six percent of the original sizes and because of this I would not need to calibrate the speedo or ABS system, whether this is true or not I don't know but when I compared speedo readout to the GPS signal they were nearly spot on.

I would say that like most track based tyres they do need a fair bit of heat in them to get the best out of them, but the fact they work in the rain and have a decent level of grip available from cold means I am a happy bunny.

Cheers

Ollie
