Cylinder Head

Hi All,

Well when it rains it poors after having my car serviced and some other bits done that was suggested by TWG porsche after a overall inspection, I had to look at my oil pressure gauge as it hasnt worked porperly after having the car serviced it initially was going up and down like a yoyo but was perfect before going to them. I did phone TWG on the way home after collecting the car and they said it propably is a wire they disturbed while doing the service and i should be able to fix, bloody cheek especially that amount of money I had just paid for cam belts, service and overall inspection. Well I have looked but have found nothing wrong is there and voltages I can test at the sender?

Ok to the main problem is I was changing ingnition leads and have noticed that one of the spark plug holes was full of oil, so I manged to clean it all out and have noticed a crack and a small hole 1/4 way down the spark plug hole. So it looks like I need a recondition 16V cylinder head for a 2.5 944s, but cant seem to find where I can get one, does anyone have some advice.

As for TWG they should have picked this up when doing the spark plugs and timing belts surely and the overall inspection, I even mentioned to them that it sounded a bit tappity from that cylinder but they just ignored me. I feel I have been treated very poorly and over charged so I would not recommened these people at all.

Its not unusual for the cam cover seals to leak into the spark plug tubes. However since you mentioned a hole & a tappety sound i'd suggest removing the cam cover before going any further. I'd be concerned about where that hole came from.
 
I have uploaded a picture if you view it larger then on the left about 10 o'clock you will see the crack and hole i am talking about. will i need to drain the oil before i remove the cam cover? if not I will do this in the morning and matbe can provide more information.
 
I am not sure, it is a 16V motor and it looks like a normal cam cover, not sure what a cam box is
 
Ahh.. Your timing chain tensioner mounts on that plug hole... I think your tensioner guides have broken and have caught under the chain causing excessive tension for the tensioner.. It is held on by 2x 6mm bolts just next to plug hole No2.. looks like it has ripped off the head.. ...(only seen this happen once)

umm when the timing belts and balance belts and water pump where replaced would they off had to work on this as well? does it mean a replacement cylinder head or can this be fixed. I will take cam cover off tomorrow and take some more photos to post. My car still runs ok so hope it is not that drastic
 
You don't need to drain the oil. Seeing that pic I wouls agree with red leader but you won't know for sure until you get a look inside. More pics please!
 
That's the only reason I can see for a hole in the head on No2 plug hole.. Hope I'm wrong.. Don't use it until you've taken the cam cover off..
 
ok thanks will take it off tomorrow and post photos for your expert opinion, thanks so much to all that have replied, looks like it was previously repaired

all i need to do now is find a replacement cylinder head and get that fitted before I contine the rest of the work like interior, and re-spray, do you think i could still drive the car as I dont think I will be able to do the cylinder head swap as it seems complicated. I have swapped on alfa's in the 1980 but they never had balance belts.
 
Before you remove the head you could get a sleeve machined down to the diameter of the plug hole. That might stop it leaking oil into the plug hole.Just an idea.
 
Without seeing it myself its hard to tell but it looks like the previous repair is still ok - has it only been partially welded or is there evidence that the previous weld has failed? Of course, a replacement head is the 'best' option but a very expensive one. Is it possible the repair is holding up & it has always leaked some oil since the work was done?

You don't need to disturb the balace belt to change the head, just slacken the cambelt & slip it off the cam. However if you aren't confident its probably not a job to try and do at home.
 
My concern is the crack on the inside, it could get worse and cause damage. Ok so to change the head as long as I set TDC on compression stroke and loosed the cam belt then I can remove the head and refit with new gaskets etc.. Sounds a bit easier than having to do remove balance belts etc...
The only thing is that I have seen somewhere about setting TDC then retard by 10 degrees (1-1.5 teeth) is this correct or just keep everything aligned at TDC. I have found a cylinder head in good condition with out the cams and the person has asked me to make an offer but not sure what they are worth any thoughts.
 
Give Alasdair a shout (sulzeruk). He has an S he is breaking. I can't remember if the head is ok or not. I think a piston seized and the head is fine. Might be wrong though.
