Daytime running lights

Came across this advert in the French RS magazine for replacement headlight units with daytime running lights. Not cheap at 1099euro. I assume that is for 1, it is not clear in the description but on other hand it does not ask for left or right?. Only fits the earlier (pre facelift) model and Boxster. Luckily I have the facelift model so am not tempted.

Apologies if this is common knowledge.

The OEM headlamps on the 996 are marmite and not to everyones taste, however I think these will unite everyone, they are truly atrocious

sorry Ashley but as I have not seen the headlamps in the flesh on a car I don't necessarily agree. also the company who has produced these lamps also thought differently. ray.

Interestingly when you are sitting in a 996 you can't see the shape of the headlights; I, too, was put off by the face lifted headlight, but better than the earlier iteration, I have to say. Then the opportunity to choose between a 997 and a 996 came along and doing my research I saw some pictures in an leading magazine relating to bore scoring in the 997, so I decided for the sake of reliability I would live with the headlights on the 996 turbo. A year and a bit in, they have grown on me. Nothing would possess me to retro fit DLR lights, however; a hideous gimmick, in my opinion. Let's be honest, if you need a sodding great bright l.e.d. in your face to let you know there is a car coming towards you you shouldn't be driving.

Sorry but i disagree with 924 nutter, I think these lights look pretty good, again not seen them in the flesh but from the pics they dont look bad at all.

I know that originality is always at the top of the agenda with porsche cars, but I do some times feel that people, and products get slated for no good reason.

I have recently added DRL's to my 996tt and got praise from fellow members at the recent factory tour in germany for how well I had integrated them on the car, they will never look OE as they are not OE but they have freshened up and gave the car a little face lift which I think is great.

All im saying is if you want to freshen the look of your car up, why is that such a crime on porsche cars??

In India new build Morris Oxfords are fitted with drum brakes because there are so many cars that don't have discs fitting disc is considered to be a hazard. So it is with brighter and brighter lights. HOW I ask is the poor blighter with his vintage motorcycle and single 45/50 w (if he is lucky) headlight supposed to see where he is going with the intensity of modern lights. Any car, whether it has DRL designed in or retro fitted, looks a bit naff and it is all a bit too " look at me", in my humble opinion. And what about the planet's resources? If just a million cars worldwide have these lights, all pulling a single amp that is 12 megawatts, or enough power to light Birmingham, and the most inefficient way to generate 12 Mw is to have one million 110 amp alternators generating 12 watts each. Putting petrol in your car is a given but DRL are completely unnecessary, modern or not, and I believe they are a marketing gimmick, and how soon they will become so last year when the next fad comes along. With the greatest of respect, why not go the whole hog and colour some of the lenses, (not red) and make your cars look like mobile Christmas trees?

Likewise, this is just my humble opinion, I like the DRL's, wether its suppose to be a safety feature or not.

Porsche must also feel this as every one of there cars now have this option and the C4 and C4S can even have the red strip illuminated at the rear, again might just be a gimmick, but I still think it looks cool

Thanks for the legal update; let me know when they bring back the man with the flag. How did I ever manage to get to age 62 without them?

With ease sir - pre EU etc..................

I liked the old Volvo DLRs that have been around since at least the '70s, the modern LED over-bright dazzling jobs look particularly naf on small cars. Hopefully the design chaps will come up with something both safe and tasteful for the second generation[8|]

I'm not against DRLs per se rather the aftermarket chav looking ones.

many cars with oem lights look good and its part of the technological evolution and I guess a proven safety benefit. Some don't work however and the face-lifted Jaguar XF fits into that category for me.

I am just against change for change's sake, and as I have previously posted, if you need a sooding [sic] great bright set of l.e.d.s in your face then you should surrender your driving licence. As far as safety goes I can see (pardon the pun) flaws in the argument that they are a safety benefit. I addition, I am vehemently opposed to any blasted euro regulation that impacts on my driving pleasure. Christ knows we pay enough for it! There, now you've made me use and excalamtion mark.
