Daytime running lights

Although my post was only intended as a wind-up John I have to disagree about the safety issue. I, for one, have been confronted far too often by the stealth driver who insists on belting around in the pouring rain/late dusk in a grey car determined, it seems, to remain undetected until they hit or are hit by something. I agree they are totally pointless on a bright day (the lights, not the driver). I think the issue is how bright do they need to be?! (Again, the car not the driver as we know they are dim)
I wonder how many drivers would not wear a selt belt if it wasn't the law. Same thing with mobile phones. Sadly, a lot of our laws are driven (excuse my pun) by the lowest common denominator.
PS - Don't forget your BP pill[:D]

Im quite happy for that law to be removed, if a person is stupid enough not to wear a seatbelt should they really be driving?

Good point Chris. I think you should start a campaign to get the law changed based on that argument so that we can remove these fools from the gene pool.[;)]

Me too. Very unfortunately, these people need protecting from themselves.

They are the same sort of people that I regularly see in Maidenhead driving through town when it is dark, without lights. Now wouldn't you think they might notice that the dashboard is black and they can't see the speedo or dials? Apparently not. Reverse ostrich mode. They can see everyone else, so why can't everyone else see them?

But don't get me started on the misuse of rear fog lights. These idiots seem to find the switch for them far too readily.

Totally agree Richard.
I should have mentioned in my previous post concerning the seat belt law that it too was not universally welcomed as a necessary safety feature when it was introduced. Chris and many others started driving at a time when it had been law for quite some time and accepted it without question. Not the case for myself and many others around here, sadly, and I remember the "nanny state/it will detract from my driving pleasure/ I will be trapped in my car/they are uncomfortable" arguments being voiced by many at the time. Indeed a long running ad campaign was used to persuade those who didn't clunk/clink every trip! Best not mention who fronted that ad though..[&:]
Whether the driving light legislation will save as many lives is indeed debatable but I would suggest that more research has been put into it than just change for change sake and what can we think up next to annoy the motorist![;)]

Evidence out there already suggests not only that day time running lights don't minimise accidents, but in some cases actually increases the accident rate

That's exactly what I was going to say but I went down the politically correct root :).
