decisions......to restore or to change?

Rather than change the "turbo/S2" thread, a new one! Opinions please - I'll live to regret this....[]

With the possibility of a few £s being freed up, do I spend a large-ish chunk on the Lux or a bit more for an S2? Turbo is not an option, sorry but it doesn't appeal to what I need the car to do.

Speed is not all that important in the grand scheme. With cameras everywhere what's the point and I've never felt totally underpowered even in convoy with some 400bhp plus machines in the real world. It would not be tracked, either. I like the fact that the Lux is a hoot at useable speeds, particularly on P6000s! [:)]

So, is there any point me changing for an S2, probably around £3-£4k plus the Lux? Or, do I get the bodywork tarted up, wheels re-furbed, suspension overhauled to improve the feel of the car, and have what would be one of the best Luxi out there? Running costs aren't going to be very different in either case.

Well Paul, your car must be worth £4k as a good one, so another £2k would get you a nice S2?

...or you could put £3k to it and get some luvvverrrlly BOOOOOSSSTT!!![:D]

Just kidding[;)]

Not now I've listed it's faults in public.....[:D][:D][:D]

Seriously, I'd value my car at nearer £2.5k after I sort a couple of paint issues out - most people have seen the scratch on my front wing for instance. If I was to do that, why not do the whole lot and keep the car? But - I've always had a real soft spot for the "speedster" look of the cabs, and would love a maritime or tahoe cab. Or coupe.

And - I did want George's car but it was too early by about 3 months! []

Paul,
You know the history of the car you have. The car is going to last well into the future so why not spend a little bit of money on the bits that do need / you want to do. Picture the scenerio - spend up to the hilt on another car only to find that in the near future it needs money spending on it that you haven't got.
Older 944s get more admiring looks IMHO than their newer counterparts.

Cheers,

I'm sorry to say, I'm with Fred here. I've never driven (even sat in) a Lux, but the following usually applies to "should I sell and buy another one, or should I stick with what I've got" decisions ...

Selling is a hassle, and you rarely get what you want for your car. (Nothing personal, most people have an over-inflated idea of the value of their P&J).

A new car can look great, but you never know all the problems until you have owned it for a month or so, and taken parts of it apart. Even the most spanking looking car has the potential to present a bill or two, and some of them large. (George Henson's machine was possibly the nicest S2 I have ever seen, but if he was being honest I am sure he could reel off the things that were not perfect with it.)

You know your current waggon inside and out. You know what's good, and it hides no secrets from you. As such, it is worth more to you than the financial value.

(And, on a personal note, it's always been refreshing to see that the 944 register secretary is NOT running the top-of-the-range turbo. It says more about the value of the whole of the range as a whole to see you in a very well presented example of a lesser model.)

I'd echo those comments too.

I'm sorry but you are probably in the best company you could possibly hope to be in. There are a number of people who would like to be in my shoes, including me![8|][;)] (You've got to know me to appreciate that last bit!)
There is no one finer, more respected, a marvelous benefactor of the poor and more unfortunate, I say this as a person who has known him all his life. p.s. on the other hand I also think he is a complete idiot.

Cheers,

Restore! Restore! Restore!
Why on earth do you want to go and join the 'rotten sills and wings' brigade?[:D]
You, more than anyone, should know that our cars are like gardens, they improve with age and gentle nurturing. They benefit from regular attention and careful monitoring, and seldom benefit from constant changes in ownership.[8|]
That said, your wife has told me that she can find lots and lots of uses for the money you wont be spending on this momentary mental lapse.[:D]

PS I forgot to mention that she did say you could have some new tyres!!

personally i prefer the lux to the s2 if im honest. i just think it has more character and is more torque biased rather than high revving which i think suits the handling of the car. i just felt the lux was the more complete package, more so than the turb

As much as I like my S2 I think that restoring the Lux and saving the hassle of trying to find a reasonable condition S2 and then sepnding more money on it afterwards sorting the problems you missed when buying it. That and you know the history of your car too.

If you're not hankering after the extra grunt then definately restore. Why take the risk? You may even have enough left in the kitty for a brake and suspension upgrade which will improve driver enjoyment to no end - especially on track days.

Unless you can get hold of a car you know (you know the owner, and history of car etc) then stick with what you've got. If you're not bothered about "more powah" why bother with an S2 as you're more than likely to get a few surprises on a new car .....

Another vote here for the restore option, but I guess you knew I'd say that :ROFLMAO:

I'd add a couple of choice upgrades whilst you're doing it, like some Turbo arb's which make a huge difference. After all, it's already modified (I'm counting the mirrors) so why not go a bit further [;)]

Restore, I am kind off doing it with mine by putting a new engine in it. Also soon thier will be no good Lux's left as they get broke for parts for the smallest of resons.
Only been 2 days without mine and cant wait to get it back.

Restore, restore, restore and put it back to standard like Dr Porsche intended, you know those Cup Mirrors belong on a modified chavmobile [;)]

Heres an Idea ! Do both ! Change and restore, for the right price may even throw in one of the excess girlfriends ! [;)]

Paul

If you wanted a very good S2 - by far the best I have seen Mike Holmes has recently been trying to sell his - I dont know if you remember this from the Dyno Day last October.

I think you could safely say there should be no issues with this car however you would be paying top money.
