Decorative Side Lettering. What do you think

I think the retro Porsche lettering as on the Boxster Spyder loooks nicer IMO but whatever you/next owner can remove it when you've had enough. As a side-note my brand-new 924 in 1984 had the "striped" lettering and it cost £125, the solid lettering was ever dearer! How much do they want for it now?

(not my car but the same colour/stripes)

I have a Cayman S Sport, which has the side decals as standard, and I did debate whether to take them off to start with, but I kept them. Having had the car for over a year now, I think I get more approving looks from people with them on than I have in previous Porsches without. My hypothesis is that the message it sends is more "I drive this car because it goes fast" than "I drive this car because it's expensive" [;)]

Hi All

I'm thinking of getting the (as Porsche calls it) Decorative Side Lettering applied to my Cayman. I think it is a classic Porsche styling enhancement. Just wondering what others thought. I think it is removeable - as much as I like it i'd probably need to remove them when I come to sell the car, so as not to narrow it's a appeal. What do you think?

Thinking of getting it in silver, which would go well with the alloys and my front splitters that are already in the aluminium colour.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't checked yet how much it costs but i'll be checking it out at my local OPC at the weekend perhaps and will post the prices on here. I think the decals really go with the car, like, they should be there, like "I've added these decals because I think the Cayman S is a great car". Yes the classic lettering on the Spyder looks nice and really suits it. I think the italic decals suit the Cayman, as on the Cayman S Sport in a similar way to this classic http://germancarsforsaleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/BikIhGQBmkKGrHqYOKiYEsnul0o3BLPrdygqy_3-475x285.jpg

do whatever you like cecil!![:D] personally, they would be off my car in seconds if bought with them on-but if you like it thats all that matters-as you say it can be easily removed

It'll be pricey from Porsche - no question. [&:] You could probably get it done at your local vinyl sign company or failing that, I have chum who runs the firm that signwrites most of the British touring-car field etc. I'm pretty sure he would knock out a couple of side decals for you. I'd be happy to get you a quote if you let me know what pattern you would like. [:)] Regards, Clive.

Hi I have a Porsche Cayman S also with side decals in Guard Red & they look excellent & I got Porsche Sutton Coldfield to fit them when I brought to car in 2008 & I also had Front & Rear Corners decals from a 997 GT3 RS also in Guards Red & the Cayman S decals cost about £300 & fitting was a extra £150 as I got them to fit them so they looked right on the Cayman & I also had my lower mirrors arms & Fog Light Bars sprayed Guards Red to match the side decals as my Cayman is in Carrera White. Yes you do get people looking at your car more as some people don't know what type of Porsche it is. Yours Kevin.[:)]

Thanks, Dylan, Clive - i'll bear that in mind. Kevin, was that £300 for all the decals inc the GT3 ones? How much for the Cayman S side decals only? Just want to get an idea of how much the OPC will charge before I consider elsewhere. The local OPC was at 'Porsches at Arley Hall' and offered discounts on parts and labour until the end of the year (you had to sign up at the event). Also are they applied on top of the stone guard? Just want to know what is the correct way they are done at the factory before I let anyone near it. Thanks!

Hi Flat 6 The Cayman S Decals in Guards Red was £300 Only for the pair. The 997 GT3 RS Front & Rear Corner was £50 the Pair x 2 = £100 The Rear Badge In Guards Red was £60 Sprayed The Front Fog Bars in Guards Red was £126 Spayed Shark Clear Fins Rear £25 Each x 2 = £50 Fitting of all the decals & Shark Fins was extra £150 all in. I also changed my Rear lights to all red at £300 per corner x 2 = £600 I also had the twin tail pipes fitted at £200 As I spend about £1500 on Porsche parts I got a special deal on fitting. Yours Truly Kevin.[:)] PS I hope this information is of help to yourself.

Kevin, many thanks for that. That is most useful. Also, your car looks the business in your avatar. Thanks to all for your opinions. Its been useful to hear what people think of the decals both good and bad!

Hi Flat6 I've also got the Guards Red Cayman and are toying with the idea of the decals...very interested to learn what you do and to see some photos..I've added it to mine in photoshop..but not the same as in the flesh. Tempted by the thought of a local company adding them on to save on cost. Cheers

I should be getting an OPC quote next week with 'Porsches at Arley Hall' discount. Will let you know how much it comes to. I may not get in done for a few weeks yet. Want the car to go in once to get 2 jobs done. What colour did you want? If you 'photoshopped' in silver, please post! I've only been able to find examples of black decals on Guards Red on Google Images. Cheers

I've done it using white, but I can easily change it to silver..give me a few days and I'll post some thing up. Cheers

Another vote for the Cayman side decals! I am biased though as I have white with red decals and think silver decals with red would look excellent. Mine were fitted at the factory as I specced them from new. They will need to remove the stone guard panels to fit the decals.

Morganbear - yes please! TPSCAR - thanks! After reading your post I did a bit of googling and it seems they come from the factory either with stone guards, or without if decals are selected. So i'll lose the stone guards []. I think i'll get the Oulton Park Track day out of the way first before losing my stone guards! I guess new stone guards could be placed on top of the decals though as the decals are very thin. I've been quoted 221.92 inc VAT for the decals and 1 hr labour at the OPC. With my discount voucher i'll get the decals for £188.87 & £58.75 labour inc VAT. P.S. red decals on white is bodywork probably the best combination[;)] Cecil

Thanks. That give's me an idea of the colour combination. Don't worry about the accuracy. I can get that from other cars on google[;)] I'm still a tad undecided. I'll let you know what I decide to do in a few weeks. Cheers for all the input! Cecil

I'm edging more towards leaving the car plain and simple. Incidentally, the issue of having stone guards or decals is interesting. I have seen some cars with the rear part of the decal missing. For example if you look at the pics of the black Boxster Spyder on sale at PC Leeds, on one of the pics it is missing. [link=http://ucl.porsche.de/ucl/plsql/uk/clients.show_pics?fin_=WP0ZZZ98ZBS740086&pid_=1]http://ucl.porsche.de/ucl/plsql/uk/clients.show_pics?fin_=WP0ZZZ98ZBS740086&pid_=1[/link] Can only assume during the prep it was removed, to be replaced, but the pic was taken before it was applied. You'll see that in another pic it is back! Surprised that on a car with such low mileage it was in a condition that needed it to be replaced. I am speculating here. However I saw it was missing on 2 other Spyders in picd at OPCs but they are now sold. Wondering how durable the decals are and how much punishment the paintwork takes in that location without the stone guards.
