DEPT OF TRANSPORT INITIATIVE, MAY 2006.

I`ll have to say I agree totally.

Recently in Holland, Belgium, France and Germany the driving style is completely different on their mainly two lane motorways. They all drive in the inside lane but you need to be aware that they change lanes without warning (including lorries) and drive suicidally close to each other but at least they pull over for a faster car (even British plates). I wonder what the motorway accident statistics are in EU states

Me....................I`m all for 1) lorries do 56 so they should all stay in the inside lane. How can they overtake when doing 0.5 mph more and you end up with two lorries taking up two lanes for 6 miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. 2) lorry journeys on motorways at night only 3) caravanners journeys at night (should be banned anyway) why is it that caravanners buy a car then buy the biggest van they can tow so it wont pull up hills and then load it badly so it wont steer or pull properly, absolute tw*ts most of them 4) ALLOW UNDERTAKING with the liability on the person thats being overtaken, that'll shake up the tw*ts in the middle lane no end.

There, thats off me chest [;)].....................................personal opinions of course

Lytham - Spent a while working there a couple of years ago. We all christened it "Leaving Lytham St Annes" as it appeared most of the residents went there to see out their years......... They seem to stick a that speed just too fast for third gear, but not fast enough for fourth (I'm guessing they all drive slush boxes due to the Arthritis)

Lorries - 1) Get the freight back on the Railway. 2) In Germany they have signs on hills which prohibit Lorries to overtake each other. Sounds like a good plan to me!!

Couldn't agree more - I was in Los Angeles earlier this year, and undertaking on the freeway is allowed. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it works well. I never saw a single bump in the 1000+ miles of freeway driving.

If only they would do a full 0.5mph more - seems like less sometimes!

Why do they have to have limiters anyway, surely loss of licence is an even bigger threat to them and their speeds are recorded on the Tacho. IIRC made no difference to accidents.
Tony
edited to add
In addition they have a 40 limit on single national speed limit - they dont speed there (arguably more danerous if they did) without a limiter,

Very true - Dublin has an average age of something in the early-mid twenties, Lytham must be early 60s!. It's the only place I could feel young again until I got my Porsche!!

I did 5 years at Moorland Road - J Block, working for ITSA, then 5 years at Peel Park working for Sema (Now Atos Origin). You've lost me - who are the good guys there?

My only problem with the US style of freeway driving is that there are enough accidents caused by people pulling out on overtaking cars in the mirror blind spots - the problem would be worse if people had to look out on both sides of the car. I know you're not supposed to trust your mirrors and always look over your shoulder, and i'm sure everyone on this forum does, but the simple fact of life is that people don't. The UK has the safest roads in the world (probably because we spend most of our time in traffic jams) - I don't think we need to look over the Atlantic for any more ideas.

Derby County Council have a real cheek. In the past 7 years they've built a 35,000 seater football stadium, a huge multistorey carpark, a huge extension to Derby University and the Halls of residence and a massive shopping centre that will be bigger than Meadowhall and all are slap bang in the city center and they havn't built or widened one existing road, and they now have the cheek to complain about road congestion and are talking about introducing some sort of conjestion charge. Unbelievable. Who are these idiots who work in the town planning departments? can't they comprehend that if you attract more people to the city centre guess what....you'll get more traffic!! Absolute incompetent morons, the lot of them!!! I bet you that most of them are lefty environmentalists who only travel by bicycle or space hopper and have no clue about roads or driving. The worlds gone mad. Few, I feel better for that!

Surely you only need to look on the side that you're moving towards? [&:]

Arguably it could make it safer, if people assumed that they needed to look when changing lane to the left. At present, I'm sure some people just move over without looking... []

I was doing testing in H Block quite alot. I work for Intranet on the Comms Govt side. Figured you must have worked for the big E, hence the good guys bit[:D]. Still over at PP at least once a week, but with small family, very rarely stop over now!

That's how I found it to be - I was very careful to look to the lane I was aiming for when swapping lanes, and it made me very aware. If only we didn't have middle lane hoggers. []
