Desperate for a 944! Any ideas where to look?

I got mine from Strasse in January this year and am very happy with it and them. They have an s2 in now thats been there a few months, have you looked at that one?

I can't help with Edinburgh, but I'm in Maidenhead right now and I'm happy to spend some time chatting about 944's over a pint if you fancy it one evening; I haven't done it since, oooh, last night...

I'd be a lot more scared of a 3.2 than a 944. In fact I was going to buy a 3.2, but I looked at a few and bottled it because of the corrosion that just seems to appear on them all of a sudden and bought a 964 instead.

I have long been an advocate of high miles on any car; cheaper to buy and unlikely to have been a lemon. I have 134k on both my running cars (coincidentally) and 159k on my 944. I bought an S2 cab at 142,500 miles to use every day and ran it for 50,000 miles in 21 months without major heartache. My Turbo had 126k on it when I bought it 5 1/2 years ago, so it was high back then also. All the nightmares with it have been self inflicted.

Last thing to consider is which model you want. The S2 and Turbo are very different to drive. If you don't intend to modify the car the S2 is probably better, but if you fancy stepping onto the slippery slope then it has to be a Turbo.

Even a cheap 968 is still just an expensive S2 in a different frock.

Hi.

Saw that car in the December issue; it was reviewed by Peter Morgan. Unfortunately, it sold quite quickly! I tried to buy it (even though I would have been eating beans for a year to cover the extra cost).

Hi.

I did indeed see an S2 advertised at Strasse (the blue one). Again, this sold during last week before I found out about it! Thanks for the info though; it is much appreciated.

Hi Fen.

I'm away to Strasbourg with work from this Sunday for up to 2 weeks. If you are around after that, I will gladly buy you a beer to pick your brains about 944's!

I'm just getting around to selling mine what with winter coming and my plans for garaging it all falling apart. Possibly too cheap for you though at a shade under £5K, but I guess it would leave you some cash to do all those things that Fen reckons are important. 92 n/a S2 with bridge spoiler, 138K on the clock and a near immaculate cloth interior. Drop me a line if you're interested.

Cheers
Mike

PS Forgot to mention that my preference is for an S2 but if the right turbo came along... well, it would be rude not to, wouldn't it?

Excellent. I will post you once I get back to arrange a meet-up. Take care & thanks for the advice so far.

I am thinking of selling my turbo if your interested, I work in maidenhead so i'm just around the corner for you.

the car has just under 114,000miles with fpsh. have lots of photos I can send you.

I am looking for around the £6k.

Will need to get the car serviced and MOT'd first though.

Let me know

I would usually expect a 7k 968 to be about as good as a 4k S2, but this may be the exception
DON'T be decieved by price. I looked at a lot of S2's when I wanted to buy one (spookily, every one of them was baltic blue, although this was pure chance), and found that price was in no way related to condition. I bought the second-cheapest one I saw, because it also happened to be the best! (It is also Baltic Blue.)

I spent just over £4k and got (what I believe to be) a very good one - an opinion backed up by the indie who inspected it for me before I coughed up the cash. Against that, I saw some at £6k and £7k which were clearly disaster zones (including the one I drove 120 miles to see, only to find that it didn't start, had obviously been heavily damaged and the owner didn't have a V5!)

Buy on condition. Price is incidental.

Are you another candidate for a Maidenhead 944 (or 964) beer and chat?

Could be, my work is only 5 minutes from 'The Shire Horse', you will have to let me know when your thinking of meeting.

Have you driven a turbo yet? I'm affraid once you've experienced the G-force of the dark side you can never go back! Speaking from my experince have tried and owned all sorts of 944's over the years. Now have 2 turbo's (and one that works;-)

I reckon come to a meet up before you buy, go out for some test drives in different models (I'm sure people will be hapy to take you for a spin) then make an informed decision. Lux is probably the most fun to drive in my oppinion being an 8v N/A has far more instant punch than 16v models and turbo's but the S2's resolve the problem of any dissapointment due to lack of power in the Lux and turbo's just give you a license losing addiction to booost!

Hi.

Ben thanks for the offer! I'll take you up on it. No, I have not yet driven a turbo; I was put off them initially by a friend (who has a 944S2) telling me that they cost loads more in servicing; but I am not so sure anymore.... Also, I like my speed [:D] & was not sure having a turbo would be good for my long term health. But, I have since decided not to rule them out.

Unfortunately, am going to be away from this Sunday for up to 2 weeks (you can blame work for this). Any chance you are ok to wait until I get back? Could possibly catch up with Fen & myself (& possibly Steve) for a beer also.

Oli, that's fair advice regarding price & condition. I will bear it in mind, thanks. You know, I forgot just how much pain you have to go through to get a car you are happy with! As I mentioned in an earlier post, it took 6 months for me to find my 911. But it was so worth it. And it will be worth it this time again.

PS: Thanks for the further links from Autotrader & RPM; it seems that more are coming up for sale (thankfully). Again, thank you all for the advice & assistance so far; it is sincerely appreciated. I had forgotton just how friendly & helpful classic car owners are.

Ray.

Lets just dispel this common myth that a turbo is in any way more expensive to maintain than an S2. There are many reasons to buy an S2 over a turbo, and depending upon your point of view, just as many reasons to buy a turbo over an S2 (or a lux over an S2 or a turbo etc.) but maintenance costs is not one of them. You are recommended to replace the oil on a turbo every 6 months but if you are wise and especially if your S2 sees the track then it is sensible to replace the oil on an S2 every 6 months as well. An S2 is better on fuel consumption than a turbo but that's just about it. There is no additional maintenance burden with a turbo, no additional checks or tests, that need to be performed at services. It's the same package of work.

Unless you have any particular preference between an S2 and turbo based upon their relative performance and the way they drive then my advice would be to look at both models and buy soley on condition. A dog of an S2 is just as expensive to run as a dog of a turbo.

Hi guys.

I am currently looking for a 944S2 or turbo with less than 100K miles & in excellent original condition for no more than £7,000. I have tried Strasse, Northway, 911 Virgin, Paul French, Eporsch, Pistonheads, 911 & Porsche World classifieds, PCGB classifieds, Classic & Sportscar classifieds but all to no avail!

Does anyone know of any other garages or websites where I might be able to source a great car? Or am I looking for the impossible for my budget? ANY suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I owned a 911 3.2 Carrera SE up to last year, when I was made an offer for the car I found difficult to refuse (I regret not keeping the car though). I then defected to a Mini Cooper S (which I have just sold) but I have the Porsche disease & nothing less will do. I want a 944 as it is something different from a 911, because I heard they are great fun to drive & I really like the way they look.

Cheers in advance.

Ray

i have a 994S2 reluctantly for sale. it has just over 100K on the clock BUT, last year i had the engine totally re-built (no expense spared) and since then i have only done about 3,000 miles. while i wouldn't claim the car is in Mint condition its in very good condition and the inside is almost concours... cars been featured in several magazines as a good example and GT Purely porsche have just used it for a future artical i'm looking for £5,500.

I was making just this point to an S2 owner on Monday as he is teetering on the edge of joining the boostie boys. Of course with the S2 you have the cams to worry about that the Turbo simply hasn't got,, so potentially it could be the more costly.
