Dinks - Cure & Prevention - Garage Queen Tendencies

So off I go....post puncture thinks I'll get some of them sticky trackday tyres.....feel great transform the car....book the trackday at Donners, here we go[8D]....the weekend previous I've cleaned it waxed it....looks super...ID'd a load of winter jobs to bring it up to scratch[:)]

....I go out yesterday to the OPC to ditch my 997 order...all A Road/Motorway, didn't hammer it but I guess the tyres got relatively warm...get back to find the rear nearside arch peppered with DINKS.....nightmare.....[][:(][][:(][:'(][:(][]

At the ace I'd spoken to Feroz, he'd mentioned he'd picked up some of these after going on some loose after a hot trackday lap.....we'd also talked about comparing notes on MPSC's vs Pirelli Corsa's....and here I am now driving around listening to the constant "shower" of stuff up inside the rear arches off these great but v.sticky tyres[:-]

NIGHTMARE.[X(][X(][X(][X(]

I am not a "polisher" to use Mels very apt terminology[;)]...my prior weekends activity being the first time I've EVER polished a car....I want to DRIVE this car in the way it was designed to be driven....BUT I just can't see compromise that allows me to do that AND keep the thing tidy![8|]

So chaps...at the risk of starting the garage queen debate all over again whats to be done?[8|]

Can I

A)...get these dinks out without paint
B)...install anything to prevent it happening every time I drive on a road
C)....when would one address all of these little things...say after a couple of years of track/road use?....and what does repainting do to the residuals

RSR/Paul....please sell my car for me and find me a shabby/used road registered clubsports/Cuppenwagen because whilst mine is far from perfect I'm struggling to enjoy driving it hard if at every juncture I'm devaluing it? Then I'll chop the clio and use the difference to buy a C2 or 993 for everyday?

Yours struggling to reconcile this little lot in my head![&:]

Well What can I say...
Even you hard nuts start going a bit wobbley at the sight of a dink....
Des has gone already are there more to follow?......Kind of pleased to see some of you other chaps have a heart...[:D]

There are plenty of companies that do paintless dent removal but be sure to get one on recommendation....I know of one but I dont spose he is local to you..

Apparently the C2/4 has wheel arch protector

Personally I would paint it after you've had your fun but can you live with it dinged? I suspect not cos I can already detect a tear.

Has your car previously been painted?...If you pay the money and have aproper job done then I don't spose anyone will notice or be worried...I think the only cars where value would be affected is with the ultra rare exceptionally low mileage pristine FSH total Garage wagen when you'd expect no paint.

Enjoy it... I wish I could..

Jeez Jimbers ! loosen up ! If you are going to worry about using the car because coachwork and paint damage will render it unsightly or will depress resale value then you wont be able to enjoy what makes it different ie the driving experience.

I agree that an unmarked barely used 964RS is a beautiful machine and it would be easy to make it a garage queen. Seeing as yours has now become somewhat normalised and bears some scars , most pragmatic course would be to stop worrying about it and carry on using it , with sticky tyres as appropiate, on track days or just weekend blasts. If you want to reduce the 'bum rash' , get some shields fitted inside the rear quarters , suggest cut down versions of standard 964 stuff , just enough to cover the trajectory of stones flung off the tyres. If it worries you get the paintless dent removal done first.

If you are totally obsessed , you need 2 964RSs , one lives in the garage and one comes to life on the road/track as nature intended [8|]

If you are just a normal semi obsessed bloke with only enough disposal to punt on one such car then you have to rationalise that you cant be getting coachwork and paintwork done up on a frequent basis. By all means do it before reselling , meantime relax and enjoy this one! Dont turn it into a garage queen , you can always do that with the next one you buy after this one. Betcha Les's will still be looking good then [:D]

Seen a few like this with paint starring on the rear three quarters. Just comes with the car Jim!

Have a close look at the Cup Car when you have a chance......

BTW, how are yer nipples?

Mel

Mel......picked up 4 new ones from the OPC not knowing how many I'll need......2 two to wash two to wear[]...inspection this weekend to check and install!

Will do herr gruppenfurerh.....car goes in tomorrow for suspension setup, geo, checkup and some bits & pieces etc. What about spacers guys....whats the thinking?

I think I'm over my fit of the polishers...thanks oldtimer....my car is less than perfect and does already have paint chips other dinks etc.....cleaned it today...looks fine....drove it quickly before I cleaned and it was magic!

can't wait to get it out on track....oh and it dawned on me that when I thought I'd done donnington I hadn't.....well only on a rover promo day when I got into trouble!!!!

it was mallory in that neck of the woods on the bike....watching BTCC today it looks a weeze!....are we doing the full circuit with the hairpin?

are we doing the full circuit with the hairpin?

No, thank goodness -a real waste of space. Known as the Melbourne Loop and just put in to bring it up to GP distance. Did it on a bike earlier this year, it's DOWNHILL to the hairpin, so heavy on the brakes, then UPHILL to rejoin the main circuit.

BTW, was there as spectator for the first time today, a great spectator as well as driver's track. Great result in the Cup -two superb races with Richard Westbrook ending up Carrera Cup champ for 2004. The racing a lot more civilised than anything I've watched when my car was competeing.....

BTCC a bit of a yawn, but Renault Clio Challenge great entertainment!!

Rgds

.....can't touch them Clio's Melv!.......I watched the BTCC Masters Seat thingy......that looked quite close too!

Good to see you talking about using it again, I have the same dilemma as mine is recently painted black and shiny, but the only way it will stay that way is if I dont use it , but I bought it to use it , mainly driving to track then track then driving home.
No one warned me about the pimples caused by sticky tyres either.... but put it all down to experience. When I get really old as compared to quite old , suppose I can think more like its too beautiful to use and suppose I can go and swap for a garage queen looking for a new home at that time.

Tell how you get on at Donny , Craners and Copse were the corners I needed to bottle up for [:D]

Craners and Copse were the corners I needed to bottle up for

I was "making progress" in the mule a year back when we came accross someone who clearly thought he had the bottle for the craner curves on cold tyres...

Literally, minutes earlier, we had seen the driver polish this car within an inch of it's life.

Puts the pimples into perspective.

Older-timer is spot on. Just enjoy them and don't worry about chips and pimples. Keeping it on the black stuff should be your primary focus. Thats more likely to de-value it. When they're all 30 years old no one is going to be too concerned thats it had some cosmetic paint.

However now you've ruined it I'm willing to help you out and buy it for £28k. [:)]

I'm just going to take it easy, I'm just going to take it easy, I'm just going to take it easy![X(][X(][X(]....but then I said that just before I landed my beautiful pristine Black/Pink Honda CBR400RR into the kitty litter at mallory![:(]

Lee.....with pictures like that your "club" list is going to fill up pretty quickly........significant ring tightening[]....thanks alot Steve.

Oh BTW Steve.....has the CS been roundy roundy? and why didn't you buy Scuttys Clubbie?

Paul....bring a trailer just in case![8|]

Anyone want to buy a trackday at Donnington, some sticky tyres, a helmet, some pixie boots and a bolt in roll cage![:D] [;)]

Jim - You'll enjoy Donington just take it easy. It'll be my first time there in the RS so I am looking forward to learning the citcuit again. Great track with some great "moments".

Mel - Melbourne hairpin isn't that bad, great for getting your knee down on a bike or the tail out in a car!

I have had a few (a dozen or so) rear-wing pimples on my car fixed without
repainting, restoring its original smooth curves. Give a call to George Morrisson
(my mechanic in Glasgow, 0141 643 1768) and he should be able to point you
out to the franchise.

Following this, I had a lightweight cover handmade to be installed inside the rear
wheelarches. Since then, no pbm.

The worse pimples I had were at Spa, where speed, gravels and Michelin Cup
interacted to good effects!

Hi PhilRS

How were the pimples removed without paint? Was it some sort of reverse dent master process? I'll try your contact to see if there is someone local who can sort out once I have a method of stopping future pimples (improve my diet??).

Speaking of which, where did you get the covers made up and installed? I was thinking of trying standard 964 items as presumably they will fit straight in. Other option was to glue some padding in the wheel arch where the stones fly up - ugly but effective.

If a few people are interested in doing this, might be able to find a good solution and split the cost.

Any more ideas (preferably sensible ones based on experience) welcomed.

Thanks

964 items should fit. You'll find that the fixings are there anyway -certainly some on the Cup Car -I just looked!!
