Distributor ventilation

OK, I'm a little confused (and easy thing), are the newer type dizzys simply the old ones with a factory conversion for the vent kit? Or do they have something else special about them aswell.

If so then as I have the vent, but it was only fitted a couple of years ago, then a belt change should be all require.

If there is something else, then I *may* need the uprated dizzys too!

Check with your OPC as to what the price really means. They usually quote the outright price but give quite a large amount back if you return the originals. I paid about £250 exchange a few years ago. As far as I can tell there is no difference other than the addition of the vent & possibly different material for the belt. However £250 was a good price for all new internals. It would cost approx £100 inc labour to have just the belt changed unless doing it yourself when it only costs about £12.

Be warned, it's a benchtop job -the drive shaft of the no. 1 dizzy has to be driven out -took Ruf at Weybridge two hours to change mine on my C4 when it broke.....and I knew it -misfire and down on power. Chris, I worry........how could you fail to notice it!!

Great, thanks for replies, so we've established that a vent kit is enough on its own, but that I should probably change the belt, and I'll probably leave this to the experts.

I've had a look through the Technical Bulletins and whilst I can find the vent kit update (TSB 9403), I can find no mention of any updated distributor with a "Z" marking anywhere. Has anyone any more information on this??

Regards

Dave

h________ , I too have opted for the vent kit and new belts, the ~£700 quoted by OPC Solihull was an exchange price for two distributors and excluded the cost of fitting, I guess the total price would end up close to £1k including VAT.

Interestingly OPC would not fit new belts, as they are not an OEM spare part [8|], so you may have to get a reputable independant specialist to supply and fit belts

cheers

Hugh call GT ONE look at the receipt and ask the question ..... [;)]

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the distributers with the "Z" marked on them are a 993 part so presumably, like a lot of the old 964 parts, it just got upgraded by a part which was common to both cars with the problem ironed out.

Interestingly, as you might expect, PET calls for the same part number, 930.602.015.01, to be used for both the 964 AND the 993. It's curious that it has a 930 part number since the 930 uses a single distributor!! No mention of a change in the PET I have. Maybe somebody knows different.

Melv, I honestly wonder if it hadn't been like that from picking it up following the paint job .... as i said, I had had suspicions but it was Jamie who told me that he was having to lift off to keep up with me down the Dunlop Straight from Coppice at Donington, --- and Mike simply confirmed it.

Des, good tip off. Invoice found from 2 years ago for replacement belt on top of vent kit. Phew! Pennies saved for other projects.....
