DME relay

Where are people buying these from now, and is there a generic version without the Porsche tax? Had to use my 3 wire wotsit to start the car today, though it fired up fine a few times afterwards with the relay.

I have bought them s/h from James at Only 911 -07772 911911-£15 + postage but to my knowledge they are generic produced by people like Valeo-if you can decipher the legend mounded on the black plastic casing & google that should get answers.

I've never bothered because James has always got one but any car brand that used the same Bosch pulsed injection system,ie. Mercedes Audi,Volkswagon,Rover etc could be a source.

The last engine temperature sensor I bought for my 924S came from a Rover specialist having searched using the Bosch ref & it was identical to others bought from Porsche but notionally,half a crown not £ 30

My son bought me the 'Solid State' DME relay which not only should last forever but also includes a 'self prime' feature for quicker starts. AFAIK it's only available in the US so may take a little time to get here in this current climate ..price isn't bad..

I think new ones are around £20. Searched youtube and it seems re soldering them works too. I've sent messages to the Ftech9 guy in the past, and he never replied. So I can't be bothered chasing him.

I have the Ftech9 one but previous to that I was getting them off eBay made for a Nova or something like that.

The Ftech9 guy was great with me - I got a few whilst I was in Florida about 4 years ago, he shipped them to my hotel as previously agreed.

I had a similar good experience with American business hospitality when working in Texas many moons ago. I was staying in a hotel in Forth Worth, spoke to IIRC Dave at Lindsey who delivered my Apexi EBC to the hotel for me. Saved me a small fortune on post, import duties and tax...

A while back there were a some parts I wanted shipped to my mums address in Arizona. Vitesse MAF kit and Wossner custom 3.0 turbo pistons were the main bits. Vendors wouldn't do it because the address on my credit card was different to my mums.

One of the main Uk parts people maybe design 911, memory playing tricks was carrying the solid state relays a while ago, maybe worth a search

I'm reslly loving the solid state DME..at first I thought, ok this is good, certainly faster than a traditional relay.. Later I read the instructions...I hadn't been starting the car properly...you first turn the ignition on, wait 3 secs and then turn to start....the engine fires up instantly, very impressive. I recommend it for sure..

Or turn the engine over on the standard relay for a couple seconds, to get oil pressure before it starts.

True...but which sounds better and which is more likely to start a car which may not be running that well..? Far less drain on the battery too.

Just fitted it Pete, was intrigued by your 3 second prime thing. Didn't notice a difference myself, but I do wonder what the vems box does of it's own accord anyway...

Ordered one from him a couple of days ago. Car wouldn't start with the relay, which is at least 12 years old. Oddly after I'd started it with the jumper wires, it would then start on the relay. Hoping it's not the ignition switch, which is task to get to.
