Do I need new front discs/pads

I have recently replaced my rear discs due to bad scoring. Both front and rear pads were new when I purchased the car a couple of years ago and still look ok. However, when hard braking from high speed, there is immense juddering of the steering wheel. Does this mean the front discs are off centre and need replacing (they look ok) and would I need the pads replacing also (they too, look ok)? Thanx, John

I would have thought new discs tbh, 9 times out of 10 if I have had judder under breaking (especially if it increases with pressure) your discs need skimming or replacing (it is likely the disc is 'warped' this is normally used to describe deposits, and build up on the disk surface from the pads and heat). If they are scored and have a lip then you may as well replace them anyway?

They aren't scored and there is no lip. In fact they look perfect but could just be warped. Would I need to replace pads also (there is plenty of life on them)??

They may look perfect from the outside, but can you see the inner faces? You would be amazed at how the inner face can corrode, and the outer face look perfect.

If it was me, I would fit new pads if changing the disks, unless they are less than a couple of thousand miles old. Certainly after 2 years I would.

Thanx for that. I'll change the front discs/pads and while I'm at it may as well change the rear pads also to be on safe side. John

What are the best pads/discs to go for? Would sebro discs and a textar/brembo/pagid combo be a good option? Just normal A/B and motorway driving.

Hey Roy,

I was looking at pads and discs after our trip to West London OPC.

Popped into Jaz on the way back and asked them what the best combo was. Was told the same thing Sebro/Textar combo.

I am looking for some now and will let you know what prices I can get.

Zimmermann discs are also good but the Sebro ones have painted hats like the Porsche ones.
Textar is owned by TMD friction who also make Pagid pads which are good for Porsches.

Bought some Kinetex Dimpled and Grooved discs which are zinc anodised. (reports on them look promising) Had them fitted today along with new pads by Mintex. On a budget so shopped around (£140 in total) Off down to London next week so will let you know how they perform. Need to take it steady for first 500 miles so you will see me whizzing down M1 on Wednesday at 71mph!!! Tried to fit them myself but, as usual, couldn't shift the damn bolts. (Indy to the rescue while I was at work).

Very interesting John. I'll be interested to hear how you get on with them.

On the subject of disks, I heard this week that Pagid UK has been bought by Euro Car Parts. Apparently, they have been packing non-Pagid-made disks in Pagid boxes. [8|]

Is Pagid not part of the TMD friction group? I thought Pagid was their flagship brand for brake parts. Isn't Design 911 owned by ECP too?

Maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick when talking to a rep from an ECP competitor, or maybe it was sour grapes on his part. I believe ECP was sold earlier this year for £225 million-ish, but I don't know who the new owners are.

Lkq corporation are the new owners of ECP. They are north america's largest aftermarket and recycled collision replacement parts supplier. Purchased ECP for £225 million initially and if it meets stiputaled growth targets, the price will increase by £55 million. Sukhpal Singh has done well! He even stays on as chairman and MD.

You are spot on. I couldn't think of Karl Chopra's name and got it mixed up with Sukhpal Singh's.

I had what I thought was a warped disc, but, after removal I was amazed how badly the discs were corroded. What you will often find is the cast iron has a hardened skin, this can be removed with a fettling hammer and if you have plenty of life in the discs they can be skimmed quite easily,I skimmed mine myself, cast iron is self lubricating and any general engineer should be able to do it for peanuts.

Dont know why things have improved but moved to pagid discs and pads last year as sebro werent doing it for me.
