Do Porsche drivers wave or even acknowledge each other?

As some of you may or may not know, I am new to Porsche having previously had a Lotus Elise, Slk and various other performance Saloons. Now in my Lotus days and to an extent even in the SLK, when I came across a fellow Lotus/Slk driver when out on the road, I would either flash or wave at them in a gesture of mutual appreciation of each others cars (to the amusement of my wife or friends may I add) and in turn would get a flash & wave back. Silly I know but would make you feel maybe 1% better and still have a bit of faith in humanity.

Now since I have had my Porsche, I do not think I have had one Porsche driver wave or flash back from the various 996's, 997's, Caymans & Boxster's that I see when out and about or on the way to work which has led me to no longer flashing or waving at other Porsches. So what's the story with Porsche drivers or am I in the minority and its just not the done thing anymore?.

P.S. I do get a strange fist type wave that resembles shaking an HP sauce bottle from non-Porsche drivers the odd time though .

Yes, occassionally the nice guys will acknowledge you as a fellow porsche driver. Some just don't. (they are too cool for that!)

As for other drivers.......had some first class bitch fighting on the way in today. A rather plump, unattractive female driving a Punto (with suspension much under pressure) refused to allow me to merge.

In my most classy and forthright way, she got the bird!

LOL,You do have a way with words Alison though i assume you get a bit more attention than your average Porsche driver[;)]

Driving an older Porsche gets you plenty of waves, nods and smiles. Plus the occasional bit of attention in a car park. I think the modern ones are a bit too ubiquitous around major cities these days. I've certainly never had a friendly wave from any of the city-centre 996/997/Boxter drivers "¦ although I did get flashed and followed along by a bloke in a nice black Cayman not too long ago.

When I come across another 944 on the motorway though, I tend to find that they're up for a bit of convoy/racing action. ;)

They are all a bunch of stuck up snobs that drive Porsches ....to be honest you would think that ,I do flash the lights and give a half hearted wave and if I dont get a responce the wave turns in two fingers [:D][:D]
I have to agree with Tony you will find the drivers of older cars are more likely to return the jesture ,I used to drive Saabs in the70's and always got a wave and the lights flashes perhaps as it was such a rare car to see .

Jen's Mini actually came with a couple of pages in the driver's manual about "Mini community etiquette"Âť, encouraging you to flash your lights at fellow Mini drivers on the roads. Very cute, and totally in tune with their (well executed) brand.

Still, never had one single friendly wave when out in the Mini. I guess nobody read it.

Brian, I only ever see your car parked. If I ever pass a yellow Boxster on the roads, I'll be sure to give a wave "¦

You need to buy an older model Porsche. 997, 996 and Boxster owners never wave for some reason. Owners of all Porsche models built before these (aircooled or the front engined water cars) wave at each other. VW Beetles and Camper vans join in too.

Ian.

Agree, older cars are a good community and do wave. So much so that I've given up trying with 997/6. Boxsters seem to wave occassionally - but even then it's the older ones.

Too many 997 owners just bought it as a car[&:], not as the engineering art form that it is.

But, Alan, now you have posted this, perhaps I'll give 996's another go and see if I get any returned waves![;)]

When I had my 968 or 993's usually always got a wave, having now moved to a cayenne Turbo and mostly get bemused looks or a total blank. Saying that had a wave from a 944 and a 930, never the newer models.

I mostly only get waves returned by air-cooled 911s, and 914, 924, 944, 968 and very rarely a 928. And I also like to surprise the odd air-cooled VW with a friendly wave (I'm an ex beetle & typ 2 owner)...

I wave to new ones, old ones and Vdubs. [:)] With the new ones I generally get one of two reactions,
firstly, completely oblivious, specially those fancy looking women with huge sunglasses (although I do seem to have that effect on fancy looking women generally)

Or alternatively, sudden realisation, but just too late and Vroom they`re past
I`m sure they`ll wave next time.

I think we should persevere, soon all Porsche drivers will be a jolly lot of wavers [:D]

To my shame I was caught out buy a Cayenne driver who waved and caught me out unawares.Haunts me to this day..... I bet he was thinking ` Bloody stuck up classic driver`

Regards Mike.

If it was, it was a good wave and a big smile. How often do you find you self in Harrogate?

I`ll never pass a Cayenne without waving again
I`m going to get a flag [;)]

Must admit that I've never even thought about waving at a Cayenne. Sorry William but I've always assumed that they were bought by people that "needed" a 4X4 and liked the badge and thought I would just get a blank stare back if I did. However, I do (nearly) always wave at every other type of Porsche and, apart from those on a mission to own all the prestige cars that are on their imaginary list before they die, they do wave back.

By the way if you've ever been snubbed by a black left hooker 993 I just didn't see you, OK? I'm the man that walked past his wife when she was coming towards him on Hawick High Street. I'm sure I have many qualities but observation isn't amongst them.

Ok need to stick up for 997 owners , well me any way ! , bought car Love it ,wave frequently and will flash if it keeps old owners happy !!!!!

Some even stop their cars on their way past houses to introduce themselves [8D]

I got it because it was so different from the 993's that I had owned previously and it was also a hoot to drive with monster acceleration!

So basically its the old school porsches/owners that appreciate the marque more and tend to wave and flash rather than the new breed that think only Lewis Hamilton & co can drive cars on a track and see a 911 as a more expensive curvy BMW 3 Series.[;)]

I have taken note.

P.S. I guess that the new breed are whats keeping Porsche in profit(most profitable car manufacturer?) and paying the bills.
