Does anyone have PSE on a Cayman

ORIGINAL: telford_mike I wish I could afford 'everything'. I've got it down to: Cayman 2.9 Speed Yellow Manual gearbox Cayman S II wheels PSE Sport Chrono Standard seat with alcantra Speed yellow belts Floormats Rear wiper Aluminium dial surrounds Poverty spec eh? I'd really like to get the exterior aluminuim kit (aluminium look side and front vents) and the decorative lettering (CAYMAN - big-style down the sides!) but I expect these tequipment bits are very expensive :(
Mike, Have you tried PDK? This may sound wacky if you are like me a manual driver but you could go PDK and not spend any more by dropping PSE, Alcantara, Cayman S wheels, Rear wiper, Ali dials. I tried it in on the track last week and pleased I did, it is faster and more economical than manual, + Chrono Sport Plus gives you launch. I was very impressed and trying to decide if I would regret not going PDK My advice, I would not go final spec until you have tried it.

Thanks Chris. I guess I'll get to try it when my OPC sends me to Silvertone after I've placed the order. I've driven a few DSG (VW, Audi) cars and didn't really get on with them, but I'm open to persuasion! To be honest it's the cost - extra 2k - I'm trying really hard to keep this below 40k!!

Mike, I also have driven lots of VW DSG products and whilst it is good I would never choose it over manual. But when I did Chobham last week PDK really comes into its own, there was a thread about this recently. Put it this way, my instructor, a certain Mr Attwood, who you nay recall from his racing reputation, said he had only ever NOT convinced one person to go PDK. He explained how it was designed by Porsche for their racing cars and does not derive from DSG. Certainly try it but not at the Silverstone DE as it is too slow to show you how good it is, e.g. Using Sports Chrono Plus it will change up only at 7200! I intend to get another demo from my OPC before making a decision. Chris

"Put it this way, my instructor, a certain Mr Attwood" my experience the same!!-fab day and definately pdk for me next time-and i also thought dsg in vw/TT pretty ho-humish------pdk differenet kettle of fish entirely[:)]

Find a dealership that will lend you a car with PDK - I don't think a test drive would be enough. If your dealership won't do this, go to another one.

Yes, I agree, I meant borrow a demo car, even then make sure you try it out somehere you can nail it as otherwise you will not see the point. PDK makes it the fastest Cayman and yet on the other hand the most ecnomical when it drops into 7th. I got 23mpg average round the track then reset it and 33mpg on the way back to the dealership

You should get even more than that on long runs - had 35.8mpg out of my 2004 Boxster S on the way down to Brands last week! I'm sold on PDK and haven't even tried it yet!

Ive got a 3.4 Gen2 and its doing 32 average since new driven gently whereas the PDK 3.4 was bettering that from Chobham back to Guildford. I wonder if anyone with a Cayman 3.4 PDK can let us know their mpg?

Regarding the PSE option. I now have one retro fitted to my 987S. The car is a 2005 MY so did not have the loom fitted originally, so i made one up myself. As it turned out the control of the PSE can be coded into the car if originally equipped with sport chrono. I also made up and fitted a manual overide button and loom to allow the PSE to remain in loud mode all the time. The new loom for the PSE overide plugs into the existing wiring so there is no need to cut any wires. The sound of the PSE is addictive, even on a 3.2 , so I can imagine the new 3.4 with its deeper gruffer note will also be enjoyable. Personally I like the PSE for its ability to be switched off when a noisy exhaust isn't appropriate such as returning home late at night or when on a long motorway journey. The only exhaust i've heard that doesnt have a significant boom and still sounds sporty is the carnewal modification to the standard rear silencer. Here is a write up on the install and some sound clips [link=http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=462561]http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=462561[/link] Here is a comparison of the carnewal vs the PSE [link=http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=462555]http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=462555[/link]
