Door Card Upgrade (Speakers)

New member
I have an early 97 boxster and the door card does not have a speaker, so its just the speaker on the top. I am not happy with the sound even though the top speaker had been upgraded by the previous owner.

What the options of putting speaker on the door ?
Can I change the door card for a later model which has the speaker pod, is it expensive new or second price (where)?
Are there any other options ?

Thanks in advance.

Try Jasmine motorsport in Lancashire for replacement used door cards. Or ebay.

Alternatively you could get a decent hifi installer to build speaker pods onto the existing door cards - will always look aftermarket, but you might be able to angle the speakers for better sound integration than the side firing Porsche build. The Porsche build has a plastic ported box as part of the door speaker enclosure btw.

checking on ebay, I came across:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSCHE-BOXSTER-DOOR-SPEAKERS-ENCLOSURES_W0QQitemZ290112176533QQihZ019QQcategoryZ38646QQcmdZViewItem

Would these work for me ? Does that mean my existing doorcard would need to be cut so these can be fitted ? Or is this only for doorcards that have the whole already ?

I rang Jamine, waiting for a callback, sounds like 300+vat for doorcards.

Those look like the stock speakers and factory bass enclosures which will only fit in the doorcard with the speaker grilles - so you still need doorcards.

You could also try douglas valley breakers, or porschapart for used cards

Looking at some doorcards on ebay, it looks the same as mine, except they have cutout to put the speaker.

Is that an option, is there enough clearance from the window ? Has anyone done this ?

Hi
I have been down the route of fitting speakers by cutting out the door card.
Firstly if you fit the speakers you see on E-Bay, you will definitely need the door cards with the pre-cut holes for the speakers. These door cards protrude out to enable the fitment of the speakers depth. I avoided all this as I wanted the best sound possible.
I have mounted 16.5 cm speakers in a "mini" enclosure onto the card.
I did this by cutting out the card (not as much as 16.5cm dia) but enough to accomadate the depth of the speaker when in its enclosure. Then and this is important, I re-inforced the card at the rear with 4mm mdf around the hole, water proofed. The mini enclosure mounts onto this in effect sandwiching the card.
All works perfectly and I am using high end stuff, but you don't need to create a mini enclosure. You can get a 13cm speaker and use mounting rings. Oh and don't forget - you need to route some wiring - that's another story !
I will post pic.

Thanks Goofy. Thats actually ideal for what I want to do, however I do not want to attempt to do it myself. Does anyone know any in car places thats would do this ?

Hi

I may be selling my Boxster. However if you want my door cards with the speaker pods all in then contact me. We can come to an arrangement - I can even fit them for you if need be !
BTW the inerior is black, no side air bags.

Not heard from the great offer above, so back on the case.

Is the 987 door cards the same as 986 ? I just wanted to know when I look for them which ones would fit. I take it if it has the side airbags it does not matter?

Sorry for delay in response, I was out and about this week.
Attached a picture of what the set up looks like.
I am willing to part with the door cards for £310 a pair (exchange & excl speakers). Fitting will be approx £30 per side and this will include wiring within the door.
Points to note are that these are not just door cards with speaker pods attached. These are fully sealed and ported door enclosures designed to take high power levels and deliver the very high quality sound.
  • Each Speaker Pod is rigidly constructed, reinforced internally and carpeted in Black. (see Pic)
  • Behind the door card is a further cavity that is fully encased and ported (polycarbonate/fibre glass) and fixed to a rigid panel reinforcing the door card.
  • Each door card is sound damped with Dynamat ( £30sq ft!) and each speaker enclosure filled with sound dampening material.
Benefits:
The fully sealed enclosure allows for deeper and cleaner bass response. It avoids vibration in the door, the ingress of water to the rear of the speakers, and the damage of the door membrane . That's why Porsche fit their door speakers with a dedicated enclosure (usually the Nokia Speakers system). Unlike Porsche though these Speaker Pods are designed for speakers up to 6.5 inches and a mounting depth of almost 3 inches (because of the rear cavity). This means more speaker options in the 6.5 inch range and with a 3 inch depth you can install mini subwoofers at a later date. The rigid construction and dampening means power levels of 150 watts per speaker can be handled without internal vibrations and rattles to spoil the sound. You can upgrade the power or speaker without worrying whether the enclosure will be damaged or sound quality detriment. The separate tweeter is placed at ideal level for imaging. This is very important as the treble is lost if placed at the floor level, but if placed in the dash it will sound disjointed from the bass & midrange from the door speakers. That's why Porsche do this in their Bose equipped Cayenne.

If you are interested pop me a message. I am willing to meet you at some point for a demo of the sound, but this will have to wait for about three weeks as I am travelling.Suffice to say the sound is awesome and allows the flexibilty of upgrading (or downgrading!) as you so wish.
A great deal of thought and design went into this with help from a very good sound technician friend (works for a recording studio!) and excellent craftsman (speaker pods and cavity).

Thanks Goofy, I think I am going to cheap out, was not planning for any amps or high power sounds, and as i only brought the car 3 weeks ago, funds are not great either.

The plan is to put in an Alpine 9887 which has 4x60 output, so thats enough power for me.

I think I am going to get the doorcard cut and put shallow depth door speakers. Does anyone know what depth is available behind a non speaker door card ?

No worries.
For your information the depth is, if I remember correctly, approx an inch to 1.5 inches. You have to be careful as the door membrane behind will get stretched and may tear. Secondly the door panel itself is not very strong in this area and do not underestimate the wiring which can be tricky. For these reasons I would suggest first that you tupgrade the front dash speakers to the best you can afford - say MB Quart or FOCALS. The head unit you mention is powerful enough. I would then supplement the sound with a self powered compact subwoofer such as the Alpine unit designed to be placed under the seat, or dash. I used this set up for a while and was very satisfied. You will also save yourself the hassle of cutting out the doors, wiring etc.

1 or 1.5 inch is kind real shallow.

I do already have an alpine sub behind the seat. But my current head unit is crap. What size is the front dash ?

forgot to mention the guy i brought it from said there a pair of Boston Accoutics in the top, and I have a pair of Polk EX series that may fit the top, do these compare to Focals or MB Quartz ? Would be worthwhile spending the money to change them ?

And is there any shallow depth speakers thats any good, that is likely to fit in the door ?

I would have thought there's at least 75mm behind the panel, but my car is an early model so yours may be different. If the door membrane is a problem then cut it away and replace it with a product called Skinz:-http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/4396.html.

Like Goofy say's there not much metal in that area, in fact there's about a 150mm high by 300mm hole there! This is filled by a large speaker pod if you have the factory set up. Installing a speaker may be a problem without fabricating a plate to fix it too.

Mine is also ealry 1997, so I might be able to get a 6x4 or 7x5, def a 51/4 maybe a 6

I would not put it on the card directly, was thinking of bolting an mdf frame behind and then attaching to that frame.

Well head unit is delayed 9887 not out till mid to late June (bugger)
