Dreadful wind noise at 75 mph+

Hi,

I have bad wind [&:]

Roof up or down, at anywhere from 75 mph to 85 mph I start to get a really loud wind noise in the cabin.

It sounds to me like it is coming from where the roof joins the screen on the passenger side, but any passenger thinks it is coming from my side.

Windows up or down makes no difference. It does not always happen, probably about 50% of the time, and I have convinced myself it occurs when it is windy outside.

The sound is hard to describe, really high pitched, really loud, a cross between an angry bee and paper in a wind tunnel!

Anyone got any ideas?

If not, where can you get a garage to test issues at 80 mph??

Thanks in advance,

Si.

Thats Puzzling ,.... if its not every time .. is there a correlation between when the lid was last up/down and the noise .. any other "it occurs after xyz" ideas

All OPC's will sit a mechanic in the car and let YOU drive it at 80mph .. its your license after all [;)]

I remember years ago a work collegue had a wheel wobble at err fair bit higher than your 80mph in his company car which was one of those amazing straight six 3L Carlton GSI's.. he took the car lease company mechanic for a drive at said "problem speeds" and had the guy curled up in the foot well screaming .. when he got back to work he was "called in by HR" and asked to "not scare the car lease company employees like that again" []

Germany? Unless you were going to be spending a lot of time in countries with higher speed limits surely it's not a problem. [8|]

is it a buffeting sound

as there is a fix for the roof's when cross winds hit it around that speed, it means stripping back the roof cover and fixing a cover across the width of the roof to cure it...

Nope, I need to try and work that out, although currently it seems to be every time, but last year I drove to the South of France and back without it happening!

Useful to know about the OPC thing, cheers

I knew I would get one of these [:)]

I do not take the pee, but may occasionally go over the speed limit by accident [;)]

It is not a buffeting sound, it is like a high pitched whine, but it may be related to that requirement, is that common?
Does it show when finished?
How much does it cost to get done?

Cheers

doesn't show at all when finished mate, it goes between the canvas and the frame..

Any idea how much? I might take a punt that it fixes it and get it done at my next service in June if not to expensive.

Is there an actual name for the part/process I would I just ask the OPC for a "roof cover fix"?

Ta.

The flaping noises at 75mph is covered by technical service bulletin TSB 6113 issued in Jan 2005. I had mine done under the factory warranty - ask your OPC for an estimate because its probably helf-full days work !

Hi, any pointers on finding these tsb's?

Re the actual noise : I saw a Top Gear repeat a while back (Series 5 Episode 8) and Jeremy Clarkson had the same noise at similar speeds in a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti in a race against James May and Richard Hammond who took planes, trains, and buses to Verbier, Switzerland. He thought it was the windscreen wipers but taped them up to no avail (apart from breaking the wipers [:D])

The trim that surrounds the windsceen might be loose - it came loose on my car - it's purely cosmetic and glued in (but if the screen's been replaced they might not have used much glue because it makes it more difficult to get it out in future). The noise could be the trim lifting at high speed.

Cheers, I will have a good poke around. Did you get the noise on your car?

I have emailed Top Gear to see if they ever found out what it was [:)]
