Ear protection.

Yep
Agree with Fred - best ear plugs I used on my bike were 'Ear-Fit' ones (soft yellow foam ones) which cut out a lot of noise as Fred says, but still able to hear most sounds (they act like a filter).
I also use them on long haul flights - I actually find them better than my Bose noise cancelling headphones!
Only problem if you're not wearing a lid, is that if you forget to take them out you can get curious looks at cafes etc!
If you haven't tried them Mark, then definitely worth a go - they are very comfy.

[Ear plugs don't stop all sounds so you're not going to miss much.]

I agree with this. I've given up using ear plugs as they're too fiddly. I now use a set of banded ear 'pods' which you can wear round your neck when not in use and then just sit them onto your ears when things get too noisy. This can be done one-handed. The lovely exhaust roar is still there and the muting effect is only slight as the pods only give about 15 dBA of protection. The ear pods can be bought from branches of ARCO, who sell safety equipment, tools etc. or by mail order. The most comfortable type are called E.A.R 'Caps' and I think they are about £2 a pair.

By the way, I already have significant (about 30 dB) noise-induced hearing loss in my right ear and I want to ensure it doesn't get any worse. I therefore try to keep my average daily exposure to less than 85 dBA.

Critch.
