Engine build progress

NIce picture. What is that blue stuff up in the sky???? [&:] Haven't seen much of that over here
 
Tough job, but someone has to do it eh?! Not jealous at all!! What sort of figures are you expecting at 1.2bar boost, once run in?

It seems you had a bit of blue sky over Basingstoke yesterday morning - drove back from there to Strasbourg with a friend in a Caterham. Though we had torrents of rain over Reims it was a fantastic trip - I think I need one now [:)] Nick, not sure of what to expect. I believe if we get 350 bhp (euro ones, not ponies from the US) at 1,2 bar we should consider ourselves happy.
 
Hello all, I'm the small guy on some of this pics, my car is on the road (for a long time I hope). Some little problems are boring me and I need to fix them, but they are minor. [;)]

At last we get to start my 3.0 today, after the last weeks were spent on 3k miles of holidays including going to and back from München for the Oktoberfest - haven't quite totally recovered yet [>:] FWIW outer Raceware studs (the smaller ones) are notably about 3mm longer than the original ones. Tightening the saddle will be done tomorrow then we will put rod/piston assembly.

Oooh a clean and shiny 3.0L block [8D] Good luck with the build. The weather must be nice over there to be building an engine al fresco [:D]
 
Hope you let dwell Autoglym Machine Cleaner on the block before using this cheapos foam lance....What degreaser did you put in the bottle ? Vigor, Teepol, P21S ?
 
Sorry, not much was done on sunday, we had too little time to really move forward. We basically only did much cleaning of the block again and eventually torqued the girdle.

Marc, many thanks for the various leftovers of new bolts from of your engine build. I had forgotten to buy some and luckily Sly found them back so we could proceed with torquing the girdle. I owe you a beer or two [:)] The girdle mates with the block almost prefectly flush around the oil pump surface, which means we may not have to spend hours with the oil stone like you had to.
 
Cylinder head is assembled. Nothing too exotic here : 2.7 intake valves, 951 exhaust valves, 951 valve springs but super light Ti valve retainers [:)] It bothers me that I could not get it cleaner than that.

Next step is to put it on the block and complete balance shaft assembly - if ever the upper balance shaft cover makes it back from Hong Kong (private joke, and not a funny one).
 
Very nice Thom. What pistons and rods did you wind up going for in your 3L. Sorry if you stated this earlier. What c/r too and what turbo? I notice that your buddies car with the 75 has Vitesse electronics. What did you decide on? Patrick
 
Thanks Patrick. Pistons are Mahle 104.5 mm 8:1, rods are Carillo. I currently run a SciVision MAF on my 2.5 which works great and if I could avoid spending even more cash by buying a Vitesse MAF it would be great. I wish I could find someone who could provide me with chips for my engine (will run a hybrid turbo and 83 lbs/hr injectors), so if you or anyone on here know someone who could do that ... High hopes here ... I feel the Vitesse MAF will always be a better solution than the SciVision but at this point I'm fed up with drowning all my money into this and just want the bloody thing to start up.
 
Great to see these projects Thom, v nice work. You guys are based in France... where do you get your parts from generally? Im down sowf france and have many reservations about bringing my motor from the UK for many reasons, mainly there seems to be little respect for cars and everyones around them, parking in car parks is a no no, finding parts and good labour requires one to sell a limb and is rare, (much head shaking is done and shrugging of shoulders etc), theft and vandalism to cars drives me nuts out here, doubt id be able to leave it anywhere 5 minutes at a time. The blue skies are nice tho. You have similar experiences in your parts? Is there such a thing as a motor factor? Im looking at changing the battery in my Bmw key fob as being a challenge without going to the dealer... Cheers, Great pics by the way, JB
 
Very interesting though I think I read somewhere else that the spend so far is huge . would it be possible to use a good S2 block assy, machined S2 pistons and a welded turbo head for a budget 3.0 turbo conversion.

Awful cam gear pulley. Just put there to adjust the camshaft to TDC so the valves don't hit the pistons when I fitted the cambox. Will try to get it cleaner later :

The next step is to fit balance shafts.
 
Thanks for the encouraging comments. Jonny, I buy OEM parts mostly from Porsche or Rose Passion - reads "Pink Passion" in English, don't know if the founders have anything to do with any sex-related business but that's for sure a pretty unusual name for a car parts provider ... [8|] The latter is a firm based in the north east of France that delivers only by mail - not sure I understand what a "motor factor" is but that could be it ? - and provides most original parts for interesting prices. Sometimes the price difference is nil, but at least they deliver pretty quickly. Last time I checked a master cylinder from them would cost about half as much as one from Porsche. It usually takes a week to get delivered, they source direcly from the factory with which they seem to have some contract as you can have almost just about every Porsche part from them & delivered at your door pretty quickly. Otherwise I buy from the US from the usual suppliers. The €/$ rate remains interesting even when taking account of import taxes. As for vandalism (etc) I hardly ever leave my 944 parked outside without attention in "unsure" areas. They stay in a full-locked garage during the week and are used only for weekends, holidays and long journeys out of main, overcrowded and car-unfriendly big cities. Whereabouts are you in the south ?
