Engine going tappity tap?

Guest

Hopefully while few of you are on here I'll get some idea, while looking for the company Rick recommended.
Last night turn engine off, as it stopped I heard a tap? sound (not crack)
On starting it this morning it turned over but did not start until the third time. Both times alarm went off, similar to when the battery is low.
There is a loud tappity sound coming from the engine. The revs are fine, no hunting etc no power loss, drives, just this sound. Obviously only want to drive it as far as a mechanic, and not daily commute before I know what it is.
Any ideas?
Cheers

Could be hydraulic tappets (!).
Porsche recommend they should be replaced every 60k miles but they generally tend to work silently until around 100-120k miles when they start getting a bit noisy.

Well it has been an expensive day!

The cause: the top slip/tension pad for the cam chain disintrigating and loosing about half the teeth from each cam! So two new cams.+
Just ordered the parts into four figures[:(] (with belts/chain/tensioner etc.)

Within the next couple of weeks I was going to have the belts changed.[]

On the bright side I feel confident that it is in good hands at Motorpreparation as recommended by Rick.
Also, thankfully I managed to get it there with what I now know to be a time bomb and could of ended up with a figure three times over to fix it.
Also I don't have to go to Lakeside this weekend[:D]

Also, a very big thanks to Rick for being very helpful and trying to source parts for me.[:)]

It may not seem like it, but lucky escape.

Not aimed at you specifically, Darren; I hate to sound like an "I told you so" but it isn't just the slipper and chain that need an eye kept on them - I don't see how the broken slipper could have caused the teeth to break off so I assume it's another S2 with failing case hardening on the cams and a worn chain causing worn teeth which has ultimately failed. It's a lot more common than most people think and I'd suggest all S2 owners (and S I guess) get their cams looked at by someone who knows what they are looking at.

Last thing to worry you Darren - there are x number of teeth floating about inside your engine now...

Most of the pieces have been picked out the top. The oil sump is going to be taken off etc. so hopefully fingers crossed ALL will be found[:(]

A couple of years ago I found pieces of broken cam sprockets in the sump ... only to find out later no tooth was missing on the camshafts.
Conclusion : the camshafts were replaced not long before I bought the car, and the engine did work well with cam sprockets bathing in the sump.

My S2 coupe had broken teeth on the sprockets - we didn't ever find all of them and I drove 20,000 more miles in it. So long as they make it to the sump without causing any problems then I think they are OK once they are in there.

I also had my new cams removed from my cab because we found a bit of valve spring on the sump plug magnet at the next service. It turned out that was an old repair too so there may be more bits of spring still in its engine and I drove 50,000 miles in it.

Unlucky Darren, but at least it wasn't the worst case scenario (small comfort I know)

My S2 is having its chain and entire tensioner done on Thursday. The chain and slipper were last done 50k miles ago, but I'll be nervously waiting for that call on Thursday []

my cam chain and tensioner were just replaced yesterday, could have been fine for another few thousand miles but must heed the advise from fen - it aint worth scrimping a couple of hundred quid, when it can save you thousands in the long run.

Darren, how's it progressing ? I've not had a chance to ask Pete.

Scottish gtrip is going well. so far the only casualty is one radiator fan switch going it's own way (John Simms).

Firstly, as I paid for the parts they have to be delivered to me. So, I rang them today (OPC Hatfeild) to make sure that they will let me know when they are sending them so I don't take the morning off for a non existant delivery that day. Mainly because I got it will be either Wed./Thurs. So, it looks like Thursday now. And then have to get them over to Pete.
I'll give Pete a ring tomorrow to keep him in the picture, as also he is off on Friday.[]

OPC rang me this morning to let me know my order was in and they will send it for an a.m. delivery tomorrow.
They also informed me that I had to pay them another £15.00 towards delivery as the cams are weighty and makes it over their limit, or something. Now I don't expect something for nothing etc. but as I have just spent over a grand on the order with them....????
Maybe they need to keep an eye on their cash flow for their new biggset OPC in the UK !
Also, the car is not going to be looked at until Tuesday[:(]

Was wondering, with new cams fitted do they require a 'bedding in' period taking it easy etc.
or will I have aquired another 50bhp and drive it like the clappers?
Only answer the first serious bit of course.

Also, what has happened to this in here writing do-da, all looks a bit different, wif a spill check and all that?

I thought the font looked different.

I don't think you need to bed in cams. Back in the day when I was less scared of the inside of an engine you used to use a thick, sticky red lube for building the engine then once the engine oil washed it away you were good to go. Don't exepct any extra go though, unfortunately.
