Engine going tappity tap?

Into the fourth week[&:] and counting.[]
Everything, belts/cams etc put in. Still low oil pressure.
Oil sump off, lots of shrapnel found. Engine flushed. Put back, still low oil pressure.
There must be something stuck preventing flow or the oil pump is knackered.
Question is, can you take oil pump off without taking the engine out? Looked at Clarks which doesn't seem to mention you have to, but there is another thought through the grapevine that you do.
Any other ideas will be very much appreciated, as the next step is a complete strip down.[:(]
Hindsight etc.

Down side: will be going to the Festival of Speed in a Ford Ka hire car.

Up side: with my PCGB 10% OPC discount, I have already saved myself £150.00 in parts alone.[&o]

Sorry to hear that after your rather significant investment things still aren't resolved. Think how good it will be when you do get it all working though.

I hope that you are not still Ka bound by Brands Hatch, although they do burn quite well.

Jeez, sorry to hear about the ongoing problems.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I don't know for sure but I would have thought the oil pump comes off without removing the engine, but the crank passes through it so it means a lot of work to get at it removing pulleys, covers etc. Engine removal and reinstallation is supposed to be up to 20 hours with strip and rebuild 16 hours, I believe. That sounds the wrong way round to me but I remember thinking that when I was told so I'm sure that was as quoted. It might well save labour to do it in the car then but only if the pump turns out to be the problem. I'm Mr "Since I'm In There" but is it maybe worth pulling the engine and fitting a set of shells (and maybe rings) from Bert so it doesn't need to come out again for a long time? You could check the clutch at the same time for no extra labour. Oil pumps are frighteningly expensive BTW; circa £400.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I don't expect it will be, but if it's any consolation a 10% OPC discount would be worth well over £250 to me.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I've sent a link to the mechanic for Clarks. From what I gather you can slip the pump off the crank, once you have taken off belts etc.
Apparently, it only takes the smallest bit of swarf to knacker a pump.(ref: Rick, ta!)
I have sourced second hand pumps for £50-£60. As I knew the cost of a new one.
It looks like I will be paying sort of twice over for things to be put on to be taken off?
Also, the car is being fitted in/worked on around booked in jobs so the conclusion seems very far away.
I just want to get it sorted and running properly as soon as soon as possible. As, the harsh reality is this is my one and only car and on a tight budget, I will have to sell it only to recoup the cost of getting it fixed..
Also it would be dangerous to drive after loosing an arm and a leg!

Right! I'm off to find a sweatshop to knock these out.

That would need a fair few dash kits to cover the cost, still if all those that were considering one were to purchase one now that might help with the bills. [;)]

What a wonderful thought ! How about it ?

I've already got 2, John Sims has got one as well. Everyone who's seen them has been impressed [:)]

Fen will buy one if you convince him it's lighter than the original (excuse the pun) [:D][:D]

I might have one yet. I'll see what the dash lights are like first though since they used to be fine and I don't intend to drive the car much in the dark. Of course if you can provide absolute data on grammes saved that might be a different story!

I want one too (well maybe two too) but I need to see it in the dark first.

Brands here we come [:D]

Well I saw them last year at brands in Ricks car and was impressed - I cant work out how it took me so long to get round to ordering, Ordered and Payment sent Wednesday (smart) package arrived yesterday. (My wife wanted to know if the box had luxury choclates in it when she spotted it on my desk [:D] ) Comprehensive instructions in coulour and excellent service just as I had heard,
Thanks

Six weeks later, I have my car back!
Firstly, the reason for the oil pressure drop was a piece of the nylon from the chain tensioner was trapped in the pressure switch.
So, three and a half bar at idle and five on power is normal?????? Thats what I have now?
Again, thanks Rick for 'behind' the scenes help.
Can't say I am completely happy with everything, but will leave it there.[;)]

(Basically at the end of my tether with all this, working away again next week so no time to do anything.)
So Pikey, if you are listening. When driving home, there was a sound coming from rear passenger side (maybe) which occurred under different circumstances road wise/driving. The best way to explain it is to take a wooden ruler and place it on the table three inches and vibrate it (hopefully you get my meaning) basically a deep vibrating hollow sound. No effect to driving, nothing in boot etc. etc. I know what a cv joint sounds like. Exhaust I doubt.
I did not have this when I dropped it off!

I get your meaning. I'm trying to imagine the pitch though (we only have modern steel rules in our house!). Is it a constant noise no matter of speed and/or turning?

Initial thoughts are loose bolt at the torque tube?, Stupid thing like the handbrake cable catching on the tyre?, binding drum/shoe/pad? I need a bit more on this one! [;)]

Today I had a good look round and bounced up and down on the car. Pulled exhaust about, checked boot for possibilities.etc.etc. Took it out, and no sound up to now.
The sound was not constant, was not speed related. Did not affect car in anyway. Only heard it three or four times, of varying length never lasting more than a couple of seconds.
The actual sound was constant not altered by speed etc. (ie. did not get louder or increase in pitch)
The sound is hard to describe. Wood was more appropriate than steel. And more of a da -oing than mechanical.
I suppose being jacked up from the front for six weeks could of put a bit of strain on shocks or joints. I don't want to think about tubes etc.[]
Fingers crossed it has fixed itself and will never return.[&:] ever.

Firstly, the strange noise has gone. Well I haven't heard for the last week. Took my rears off and checked nuts on spacers as a friend mentioned he had something similar. Maybe just coincedence that he didn't hear the sound again. So worth a go. Or, maybe it was everything realigning.
So, just got car back from having the new belts checked and an oil changed for good measure.
Thanks Peter at Motorpreparation.

WARNING
The photos you are about to see may shock some of you even offend. But please view these at my expense and this is probably the only useful thing I'll ever say on here.
Check your cams/chain/tensioner.
You have been warned.
(I know ignorance is bliss, I loved it until I became very clever)

First pic. is the reason my engine was going tappity tap!

OT.
But as I was waiting and taking in the air I came across this?
It had a normal exhaust. Maybe there is a stove inside?

Ouch Darren [:(]

I had my chain and tensioner replaced a few months ago, but I had to take it back last week as there was a slight weeping from the cam cover gasket. They changed it again for me as I waited and called me over to have a look at my cams and chain when the cover was off.

I was so annoyed afterwards when I remembered I had my camera in the glovebox and didn't take any pics []
