Engine tin....i must be mad!!

Colin....I agree....it assists others and that always good

I am about to do the big red brake upgrade next when my mounting brackets arrive from the states.Hopefully I will be able to do a write up on how it was done which will include better pictures as the tin work replacement was very difficult to take photos!!

Glad you enjoyed the thread

Tim, did all your studs on the heat exchanger survive? Today, I started preparing the car to replace tins and give it a service at the same time (plugs, valve cover gaskets, filters and oil). Exhaust and all covers are off. The bumper tin should be OK to swap but I was hoping the bell housing tin might wiggle in without disturbing the heat exchanger. However, I can see now there is no chance of this and the heat exchanger will have to come off if I'm to do it with the engine in. So I'm trying to weigh up the chances of getting the nuts off without studs breaking. It also looks like I need to get an 8 mm allen socket with a 1/4" drive as my 3/8" drives won't pass through the holes in the exchanger.

My engine is now out and all of the tinware is reusable, once powder coated, all except for the bellhousing one with is more akin to a sieve. Luckily for me, Unit 11 have a good s/h one, so that's gone off to be powder coated too!

Considering the car's 19yrs and 150,000 miles, i was actually pleasantly surprised by the condition of most of the tinware, although I have my suspicions that some may have been replaced at some point.

hi steve,

Yes my studs were all ok. They were however quite tight and a was a bit nervous that they may snap. I sprayed mine over a couple of days with 3 in 1 oil before attemping to remove them. I used a standard allen key to undo the ones through the tubes in the heat exchanger with a tube on the end. Once they were all off i used an old nut to run up and down the threads to clean them, smeared on some copper slip and replaced all the nuts. There is no way of changing that piece of tin without removing the heat exchanger.I also had to remove both exchangers due to the bolts joining them together being really rusty. Once the heat exchangers were out I used a grinder to cut of the old bolts and replaced them with new ones and a new gasket. This made putting it back together easy. I understand your fears but mine came apart ok !!

Nick,

do you have an approx cost from unit 11 for your rebuild?? and are you having top/bottom end done?

Tim

Thanks for the tips Tim, I think I'll give it a go now that the trackday I was booked on in early July has been cancelled and therefore I don't have to worry about it being off the road if problems strike. Looks like I'll be treating her to some tasty penetrating oil each night until the weekend [:D]

I managed to get the long bumper tin changed albeit with a lot of blood sweat and tears. It's really tight in there! The old one came out pretty easy once everything was undone which was probably because most of it had rusted away. Getting the new one in took a lot of persuasion. The key to getting it in was to get the two tabs that mate with the engine carrier in position. In hindsight I would say that undoing the the carrier from the engine mounts would have helped and/or removing the bumper. But that would have just added to the disassembly time which was long enough as it was!

Two pics of the old tin once I'd got it out:

looks good steve....

mine was in better shape than yours, it looks like your piece defo needed replacement. I didnt think it was that hard to change that one, mine came out quite easily and went in ok (it kind of pivoted in). Anyhow glad you sorted it

Now on to the rear tin!!! much more challenging!

Yep, haven't found any suitable size grommets yet so guess I'll have to buy the real things [:D]

Have you started on the bell housing one yet?

No, I can't face the prospect of breaking a manifold stud and losing summer time use of the car so it's going to be a winter project and mostly likely handed over to my indy to put on when the engine comes out for re-sealing.
