Essence of Porsche ....

I thought you might like to see a few pics of Hacki's wheels ...

And yes ....

They are the real deal.

This car is one of one, a test car for porsche which Hacki, after his motorcycle accident, managed to persuade Porsche to sell to him.

The only 964 Cup car with Tiptronic transmission, a car which every department of Porsche had to sign off as not containing critical engineering technology which might be of critical value to a competitor, to enable Hacki to buy it.

Raced by Walter Rohrl --- amongst others, a piece of motoring history which I am certain still contains valuable technology for competitors, Hacki, how did you do it !

Please correct me if I have made any mistakes !

I understand a few palms were greased in the process. [;)] But Porsche were in dire straits at the time and desperate to sell!!

Correct, Hacki is (IMHO) knowlegeable, persuasive --- and persistent, but his own circumstances gave Porsche reason to be generous ... and kind.

Many people at Porsche had to sign off the technology as being of no use to competitors, --- I wonder if they would have done it for anybody else ?

So, this is why it is so special ...

Porsche wanted to know how fast the Tiptronic could be for competition ...

That´s correct....

... and that is probably correct, too. After I finally got the car, Walter Röhrl said when I met him the next time: "I think, it´s good that you got this car."
Basicly, money rules the world, but there could have been a bit of something else, maybe.....
Walter Röhrl always liked to see his car again, in 1997 he took me for a few laps on the N´ring GP track in my car.... all I can say is, he´s different. You can learn from many drivers when they show you how to do it. You can´t copy what he was doing. Almost no use of the steering wheel, and everything so smooth... and fast! Somehow like playing a violin, hard to explain. Next to a ride in a Group C 962 that was my best petrolhead experience.....

But the very best was the combination of Spa, the wine tasting bar and brother Des[:D][:D].

The worst was not getting any ice cream from the gelato van in Spa, although I asked very friendly...[] And although I didn´t mention the war...[;)]

This car should be the subject of an article for Porsche Post. It might even mean we have something written under the 964RS section! :ROFLMAO:[;)][;)]

I guess there'll be something about the PCF Days in the next issue... how about Hartwig's car is featured for a later issue? It's a really interesting car, and also the Anglo-German friendship is surely worth highlighting within PCGB. Chris as you're already halfway there is this something you might be able to pull together with a couple of piccies (obviously with Herrgruppenfuhrermitderschnelleneiscremewagenen's approval)? [;)]

Rich, as a fellow R32 owner .... [;)]

Hacki, for me your story is something that Porsche now desperately need, for it's authenticity.

They really do have the power to be very different, to steal a line from Sony, like no other.

There is a greatness here which is very touching --- and the greatest thing is that, we all feel it.

For me personally it's a sense of freedom and empowerment.

It is just possible in the sanitised 2000's, that these will come to be seen as the golden years --- but it is also for Porsche to prove this idea to be wrong [;)][;)]

Walter Rohrl enjoys his older cars, it is said, for the fact that they make him work for his rewards.

That his steering, speed and steering inputs are so in harmony that the car's performance seems seamless, is a true measure of the skill of the man.

And not a skill that a modern Porsche would be capable of demonstrating --- only because it could not be allowed to ? Or can it ?

Porsche do say that all the driver aids can be turned off (when it's safe to do it), and maybe this is the nearest any driver can get to being in control --- whilst the PASM is remembering the mood of the driver, the shape of the circuit, the line that was taken where the bumps previously unsettled the car under heavy braking ? The standing water ?

You get my "drift" ?

Being adventurous is sometimes the only way of finding new skills and new limits ?

Always with an eye on the safety of others ...

And now a puzzle [:D]

A full heater in a Cup car ? Or more Hacki magic ? [;)]

Another view ...

But what is this ?

Feck!! TWO ECU's?????

I reckon it's a radar jamming device so we don't see the Hacki Panzer coming....[;)]

[:)] I know all the answers....

Here´s one: The full heater was installed by the factory before they delivered it to me. If my memory serves me correct, there had to be a working fan for the demist of the windscreen for having it road legal.

Except the hand controls there´s nothing on the pics which is not Porsche factory original. Ah, I forget, I cut the frame of the air filter after Roland Kussmaul told me to get rid off the original "hose" thing.

Two ECU´s? Yes, but that´s easy....

Hacki

Good guess, but not good enough [;)]

Somebody else may win the prize this time Melv [:D]

Hacki, thanks for sharing the secret a little longer ....

And the prize goes to .... Rich !!

Would you like to see what else goes with a racing Tiptronic ? [;)]

More secrets --- I wonder if I have a better pic ?

Amazingly the Gulf logo in the window [;)]

"Getriebesteuerung"... it helps to be able to understand a little German, even when it's upside down. [:)]

What a fantastic post Chris and what a wonderful car Hacki![:)]

Looking at the gear shift pic Hacki, do you have the option of 3-2-1 like on the standard tiptronic? How is the best way to drive it Hacki, using the up/down "tip" or just in "D" mode?

I must say that the early "RUF" style wing mirrors are the best![;)]

Is that the original steering wheel underneath your extra hand controls Hacki? Does it have power steering? I read some where that Rohrl prefered the cars with power steering. On the subject of steering, what is the standard fit wheel on a Cup Car (+ N-GT) by the way? I have seen them with the following wheels:
-Basic RS wheel (3.2 style)
-RS style leather wheel (like Hacki's), also used on 968 CS
-MOMO 07 Suede competition wheel (prototipo style with drilled spokes)
-MOMO 78 Suede wheel (solid spoke with palm moldings)

....sad aren't I [:D]

for the NGT, I believe standard wheel was indeed the standard RS wheel, certainly the pics of original cars have that, and thats what came with mine. I think the think is, they are so damn big and heavy, that everyone swaps them for suede momo style wheels from an aftermarket supplier, also done on my car. Dont know about cup cars....
