Eurocarparts brake disks

The last ones I bought had the same style flat piece as the standard pads come with, which with copper grease seems to keep them quiet,

Perhaps this isn't an appropriate forum to ask exactly what the camp fire conversation covered! I've sold out to fashion and gone with the x-drilled. The OEM disks didn't turn out to be cheaper afteral (and they just look boring). I'm not going to bother with painting the bells and see how they go. I can always paint them later if they do start to rust. Red stuff pads are also on their way. Cheers all for advice as always.

Fitted my non drilled Zimm's and Pagid pads from ECP in April Strangely they seem okay round town, but get them warmed up and higher speed braking shows up an annoying wobble thru the steering wheel.....does that mean I've reached warp speed?

They were very reasonably priced................hmmmm !

So not really enough 'yes they do' or 'no they don'ts' but I never had this with my previous OEM discs, and if I'd realised they turn orange the first time it rained, I'd have painted them first.

So the experience of a couple of people here is to smear copperslip on the back of the pad with successfull results - sounds like the way to go instead of faffing about with glue's and double sided tape. Do you bother with the anti-squeal plates at all (so the pistons are applied direct onto the back of the pad) or apply the Copperslip between the plate and the back of the pad?

I apply the copperslip to the plate stuck to the back of the brake pad and the edges of the pad itself.

By the next time I check the pads, the plate has already come loose, so at that point I discard it and apply copperslip directly to the back of the pad itself.

Got my Red Stuff pads last night (still awaiting my disks) but interestingly enough the fitting instructions that came with the pads specifically said NOT to re-fit the original anti-squeal shims or the thickness of the pad would be too large.

Scott,

Not sure what you went for in the end, but for info:-

I had Motortune reburb all my callipers back in Jan05. Whilst they were doing this, it seemed silly not to stick all new discs and pads on (although the old ones had a few 000 miles left in them).

They use Eurocarparts (among others) so it got four Zimmermann discs (although ECP do stock Sebro and ATE as well). As others have stated - the bells rusted as the last wheel bolt was tightened, but as they seemed to work well I wasn't too upset. (certainly not upset enough to pull the wheels off and paint them [&:]

Was back at Motortune yesterday to get them to confirm a warped disc ~ diagnosed as one of the fronts. Rears are fine. I knew that I hadn't cooked them.

Not ideal as far as Zimmerman quality control goes, but to their credit both fronts are being replaced without quibble by ECP despite 5K miles / 9 months on the car.

Peter (Motortune) reckoned it was the first time he'd seen this problem with the Zimms, and he's fitted plenty.

As of next week, I shall mostly be braking again (as opposed to b-b-b-b-b-braking). [8|]

Just fitted my x-drilled zimm's and red stuff pads this morning. All went OK and my brake wear sensors plugged in a treat. The only difficulty I faced was getting the old disks off. It seems the white powdery corrosion on the edge of the mounting hub meant alot of WD40 and a few blows with a rubber mallet was required. I made sure I used plenty of Copperslip on the hub and the inside of the disk bell when installing my new disks. I will have to see how I get on with them over the next few months.

I'm not too concerned about the bells rusting because if my old disks are anything to go by the bells get a good coating of black brake dust which will cover up the rust nicely.

I did notice that my ABS sensor and the castelations on the hubs were caked in years worth of brake dust and crud. I gave them a bit of a clean up with WD 40 but am wondering if this might be the cause of the intermittant ABS problem i've been having that means the '!' warning light illuminates along with the ABS light.

By the way the drilled disks do look nice!

Just thought i'd post a pic. I'd just washed the car about 40 mins before and hadn't taken it for my usual run round the block to get the water and surface rust off. This amount of surface rust was what I got before afer a wash.

I imagine your bells are pretty much uniformly rust-red by now. Seriously with those wheels that make the bell very visible you should take the 30 minutes to paint them it will make a HUGE difference.

I got X-drilled Zim's from the states (with my discount from Paragon, it worked out cheaper than here, even with shiping!), and they rusted as soon as I had them out the box! £5 for a can of VHT black from halfauds is worth the investment.

When I did the pads too, i did my pagid oranges with just copper grease, and they squeal like a pig! (but then they are a very hard compound). I've actually got a set of stick on anti-squeal plates to put on when I get around to it. But I'll be greasing them up aswell.....

There should be a couple of threaded holes on the flange that you can wind a pair of suitably sized bolts into which work the disc off, sometimes you need a rubber mallet as well, but I thought I would point it out in case you missed them.

Yes, I spotted them but had no suitable bolts to use. They came off reasonably easily with a few delicate blows of the rubber mallet and about a gallon of WD40. With the amount of Copperslip I applied they will be slipping off nice and easy next time though!

Have to report no signs of rust on the bells yet 3days on and 100 miles later.
