European Breakdown Cover (urgent!)

That's only if you break down in the UK. They (subbed to the AA) will tow you further, but you have to pay

My car was recovered from Nurburg back to my house completely FOC. They would have paid to get me back but I was able to get a lift with a friend so didn't need it.

Ah. So they'll tow you back home from the other side of Europe, but won't tow you home from the other side of the country?

yes - pretty much like lots of other breakdown companies - they will tow you to a garage to get it fixed. AA Relay or similar is usually extra. Anyway, it's less relevant if you have UK cover that includes this from another party.

Chaps,

Thanks for your help. Now back home after having done 1500 miles or so in France without a problem at all, hence my fussing about the breakdown cover was unnecessary, but it gave us peace of mind (and the cover continues for another 12 months or so.)

The only faint fly in the ointment was a small run-in with les flics. A gendarme pulled us over on the last day and booked me for speeding! 90EUR later and we were allowed to go, and if the speed he claimed I was doing was true then I guess I got off lightly. I'm not sure whether to be embarrassed and humbled or whether to see it as a badge of honour. The piece of paper he gave me for the offence is on my desk in front of me, and I'm not sure whether to bin it or frame it ... I'm inclining towards the latter! [:)]

I do remember fondly, however on a recent less spirited drive to the mountains I picked up a 90 Euro fine (for 105 ish) and they were well hidden. I was between a Belgian registered Range Rover and French registered renault all doing the same speeds. We were near an autoroute side town where I tend to be more restrained, if fugured wrongly that they would pick on the french or belgians first.

Hmmm. Interesting story Tony, thanks. Funnily enough, the Gendarme who pulled me over spoke good English, right up to the point where I asked why the French car I was behind which was travelling at the same speed hadn't been pulled over. His grasp of English disappeared at that point ... at least, until he pulled in another Brit, a minute later ....

Thanks again for your help chaps.

Near Nempoint St Fermin, in the Somme region. I suspect it was a classic; stand by a Route Nationale with a speed gun on a Saturday afternoon and nobble Brits as they go north to catch the ferry.

Sorry to hear of your run in with the Gendarme Oli.... let's hope they don't report the offence back here... in the old days it would stop there as the UK wasn't interested in traffic offences committed abroad.. alas it's not the same today....:( Hope you enjoyed the French roads...pretty empty when compared to ours and more suitable for higher speeds, perfect for stretching the 944's long legs..:)

Pete,

Thanks. I'm given to understand that speeding fines abroad amount to no more than that - fines, with no points. I don't think I have much cause to be worried ... let me know if you know otherwise.

Oli.

Oli it may be only for those who have triggered a speed camera, in the old days you just drove through them at what ever speed felt safe, today you'll get a letter in the post. It may be that since you stopped and paid the fine that you'll hear no more... others who are more up to date with driving offences in France may know the full details... let's hope it only applies to camera's...:)

Pete

They are just looking for cash. They won't be bothered harassing you with points if they can extort a bit from cooperative little Englishman.

From what I have read, if they stop you and fine you then it goes no further than that. I think that if you are caught on a camera then they send you letters but can't enforce the fine (although can take you to court if you try to re-enter the country). Either way, I haven't read anything to say that the fines cross the border, as TTM said. (Mind you, TTM needs to be careful about who he calls a Little Englander!)

Oli.

Oops Sorry I totally ignored this term had an unpleasant pejorative meaning! I just meant "nicely cooperative tourist from the UK" if that makes more sense! Apologies!
