Evo mag- Nov- 993 vs Cayman
- Thread starter Robertb

I thought it was interesting concept to seriously compare an 8ok mile car (with all the attendant suspension wear, etc) with a brand new fresh out of the box Cayman.
Wonder how they would have felt if the 993 was refreshed?

These poor magazine people must be struggling to come up with interesting articles ... why can't they do serious testing with lap times etc rather than do meaningless comparisons of totally dissimilar cars.
Didn't someone do a recent 993S vs 997S on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria ? Nobody suggested the 993 shockers might be stuffed !
Where's my Prozac ... [8D]
Quite! ...and (on the older car) when was the tracking last done? ...and the running gear...rubber bushes etc etc comparing with brand new! Crazy.

Yeah but the 993 comes out good nonetheless - Cayman couldn't shake it. Thought it was an interesting article myself, enjoyed the F40/F430 comparison too.

They still said the 993 was more satisfying, and that's without tinkering with it.
I thought the 993 came out well.
I'd like the F40 though, it still looks fantastic. I liked it when it was launched and I like it more now, and Ferrari still haven't managed to match it IMO. A real example of less is more.
Not sure if I am good enough to get the most out of it though.
Two years ago a team turned up at Snetterton to campaign an F40 and F50 in an Anglo-American-Italian challenge series. Chatted to the team principal and main driver and he said (in explanation for his being trounced by lesser machinery) that it was difficult to pedal properly round a track. Seems the turbo shove is somewhat crude and sudden and rather disconcerting round slow corners. he much preferred the F50.
He should know about handling hairy-arsed machinery, since his personal steed is a 993 GT2 with 525brake!

The 993 came out well, they didn't get into sufficient depth for me. I'm hoping that since they have purchased the 993 that it will be featured in their long term updates.

It was a great comparison a ten year old motor against a state of the art newbe, and the 993, did'nt it do well! just makes me want to keep mine all over again.
I think this is just an indication of just how good the 993 is, there is not many other cars out there that could achieve what this model has done, forget the Ferrari its only good as an ornament, not only that but you could get 10, 993's for the price of 1 F40!
I forgot what the other comparison was in the mag which says it all really.
All you fellow 993 owners should be proud to own one.
I guess i am in the right place to adore my 993![][]

I was expressing this to a colleague whilst he read the article, and he pointed out the text "Porsche has forbidden direct comparison (of the Cayman) with the 911 - and that includes the 993". I'd only half-read that first time round.
With the whole point of the article rather compromised - they were left to tread a rather fine line..... [] This is brought into stark clarity when you read the F430 vs F40 article (which is excellent).
On the subject of the mag - my subs copy was late and I whinged. As opposed to crediting me a further month, they sent another copy. [&:] The original did of course turn up, so I now have an unused copy here (a std mag as opposed to the smart "collectors edition" you now get with subs).
So - free to a good home if anyone wants it. First come first served - just send me an email. []

Great news - indeed, the 993 has been added to their Fast Fleet as a long termer!! Surely the recognition of the 993 is being recognised as it is the oldest "new car" to be added to EVO's veritable Fast Fleet?
I'm guessing that Harry metcalfe simply decided to add one to his fleet of cars when he reaslised how little he could get a nice one for. He ran a LHD drive 993T for a year or so a few years back (and loved it), but sold the car. I'd expect evo to run some reports on it for 6 months or so, and then it'll dissapear from the mag pages, but remain in Harry's garage (with his 60's Lotus Elan, Lotus 340R, beutiful 20V Ur-Quattro (one of the last 10 made I think) etc etc etc. Which reminds me - must send evo a letter to get a feature on Harry's collection.....
