Exhaust again ...

I am looking to replace the exhaust in my S2 with a beefier one in terms of sound and power gain. I know there are a few in the market ranging from £150 to £1k+ but do they really give you that extra omph? Has their bhp gain claim actually be verified? What else are available and what would you recoemmend please.

Personally, Id fit a Dansk stainless rear section. Id expect to pay about £150 if I was lucky and a little more from Bert Gear. As the packing settles it'll get a little noisier and the straight through design will give it within a spit of anything costing 5x as much...

As an aside, if you look you'll see that (very) many of the 944 race cars use the same exhaust.

So Dansk is the more cost-effective option.

Mine is a 89 catless model and I have already removed the mid-siliencer section with a striaght thru steel pipe which has improved the sound and breath easier too.

Some of the costier ones claimed their ones were developed with dyno-tested but how true is that and how many bhp gain?

I still like my ESS/Janspeed one, I can't verify if it gives any extra performance on my car but it sounds nice and is very well made.

I doubt you'll notice anything other than a change in loudness if you already have no cat, so you may as well go cheap.

Ive retained the standard resonator in my early 944. I doubt that removing it will give me anything other than tinnitus and whilst I dont believe that itll take me over any noise limits (I have a 'lauch control' 4000rpm limit thatll help there anyway, and hopefully full power gearchanges too, when I work out all of the switches and wires), but with the polycarbonate rear hatch and no trim its loud enough inside already!

I think the standard system across the 944 range was pretty good, but the fitting of a cat strangles it - they weren't designed for catalytic convertors after all. Unless you're talking modified Turbos, apart from a decat I think any changes are just for looks & sound.

..and possibly weight. I know it's low down where it matters least, but the standard S2 exhaust seems to be made from spare parts from Isambard Brunel's bridge building projects...

Charles/Fen (and others),

What's the concensus on removing the centre silencer on a non-cat S2? It's something I think about doing, and keep on meaning to get 'round to, but never do. Does it help breathing at all? Any more oomph?

Also, how much of a job is it to change? Is there a join close by each side of it, or are you into replacing quite a lot of pipework?

So we don't rate these expensive Wortec systems or a Hayward and Scott one? One is half the price of the other but still quite alot!

Oli,

I found that it sounds and breathes better after removing mid-siliencer. The guy in the custom exhaust shop just cut off the mid silencer with about an inch of pipe spare on each side and the straight thru pipe replacement (welded in) is very straight forward - £30 all in. The mid-silencer in mine generates lots of rattles and this is one of the reasons why I wanted to get rid of it.

Charles,

Thanks. You had that done somewhere in Bracknell, didn't you?

Interesting what you say about rattles. I have a rattle somewhere in my exhaust ... interesting if it is the middle baffle!

Im re-considering removing my resonator too. Better to be deafened by the exhaust than by the transaxle, tyre roar, and every other squeak bang and groan.....

I have a Hayward & Scott exhaust which sounds very nice when giving it a bit of a prod on the loud pedal and quiet and refined whilst driving like Miss Daisy.

I will defer to the other's Oli. On my S2 cab the car was significantly less snappy (and fruity sounding) when a crack ahead of the cat was picked up at MoT and welded, so I assume decat makes a big difference but I have no idea how restrictive the resonator is.

Wortec is a name I'm not familiar with - new to the scene recently? I liked my H&S Turbo exhaust but is it worth a premium? Probably not. Their customer service is excellent though as a mate with an S2 cab had issues an they bent over backward to fix them.

Thanks ... that raises an interesting point that may have been discussed on here: the pre-cat and cat S2's were all rated at the same power output - non? What changed between the cars other than removing the centre silencer and fitting a cat? Was the chip different? Was there any difference to the intake manifold/exhaust manifold/engine? (Were they any different to drive in any way? Was the non-cat version sparklier than the catted one?)

If there were no other differences (which is as I suspect it to be), then would it be fair to assume that the cat is as restrictive as the centre silencer? In which case, there would be a reasonable amount of gain in removing the centre silencer ... as Charles said ...

Oli.

I like your thinking. Take it out and find out.

I suspect you are possibly right (though why use a restrictive resonator?), but possibly the non-cat cars are "sparklier" and make more than the power quoted. Actually in the case of the S2 perhaps the resonator was chosen for cat-like performance to keep things even as cats were being fitted by the time it launched.

The Wortec system is a very nice bit of kit being a full 3" system and sounds great, but is only for the Turbo. Useful if you are going down the dark path of modding...

I had the ESS/Janspeed exhaust (tail piece and mid pipe) on my old Turbo and that was very nice too with a good sound without being too loud and of good quality.

The ESS ones were developed with the aid of a dyno but dont know if they have been externally verified (Janspeed who developed them have a good reputation to protect though), Happy with mine and it was on the car when I topped the dyno charts.

Oli,
Mine one was done in a exhaust shop in Basingstoke called Highlife (??). The difference is immediate as soon as I drove it out from the garage. It just seems to accelerate better and smoother. Mind you, I already have a K&N filter and a Promax chip installed at the time.

Anyway, all I have collected so far is that some of the more expensive ones make better sound but no mention if there is a real gain in power? So I think a £150 Dansk backpipe may just as well do the job which I think is also much lighter too.
