Extended Warranty on 987

My two year warranty is due to expire in the next few days but I can't make up my mind whether to pay it, ignore it or put the £900 in a high interest savings account (just in case!) Any advice?

I am in the same predicament - not helped by it taking 4 days for Wilmslow to return my call to their Warranty Renewal person !

It all depends on your approach to risk in general - if you can afford £10-12k for a new engine should the worst happen then fine, don't bother. Otherwise take the warranty, or find a brilliantly high interest account and tell us all about it. [;)]

Bear in mind the warranty also includes Porsche Assistance, which to get equivalent cover from the RAC (European wide, flights, hotels, recovery etc etc) is around £170.

I'm undecided as yet - if i do you can bet there will be 12 months of perfect motoring, if i don't take it i darent think [:(][:(] !

My first post, so be kind. I renewed the warranty on my 987 in June, because of various Electrical problems I had with the car which the OPC took 3 attempts and much angst to sort (I Hope). What annoys me and have written to Porsche about, when buying the car and again before renewing warranty, is the fact that you have to make the decision after 2 years. In this day and age of at least 3 years warranty from almost every other manufacturer, it is I think pretty poor and makes you think Porsche do not have faith in their product. Perhaps we should start a campaign to let Porsche know that we think this should be updated. Will not help with the cost, which is probably reasonable taking into account the Assistance benefits but delays the decision for another year, might persuade me to buy a new car!

As my first post, why does it show me as a Non Member?? I am a member of PCGB and have been for 12 years. My Membership number is shown on my profile?

Hi David,
The details for ensuring you are set up as a member were in the welcome email sent when you joined the forum.

I asked the same question of Honest John given I went through 2 roofs, a set of horns and a crank case seal in 2 years warranty. His reply (when asked buy a warranty or a newer Boxster)?
"I'd grimace and buy a Porsche warranty and soldier on.
As far as I know, no one else is prepared to underwrite proper warranties on Porsches for sensible money."

I didn't bother. See his DT column back copies for an example of how Porsche UK refused to entertain a claim just out of warranty on a low mileage example

Sent my forms off today - its peace of mind to me, and having just had £2ks worth of preventative work completed at the end of the manufacturers period i really can't complain.

My warranty runs out in May 08 and I will be putting another one on it , it is peace of mind ,the sad thing is it is a Porsche and reliability is suspect that is why a lot of owners buy the extended warranty ,would we do this with our day to day transport ? I have a Skoda Octavia that is 5 years old and has not missd a beat and would never thing about extended warranty on it and any other cars I have had over the 44 years that I have been driving (yes I am that old ) in fact worked it out that I have had close to 60+ cars over the years ,9 of them Porsche

The older I get the worse I get [:D]

Brian - i've never taken out an extended warranty on any of my previous cars either, but i suspect that like you most of them were sold well within the manufactures (3yrs []) period [;)]

Its a shame we don't have faith in a product from a company thats supposedly built its reputation on engineering integrity - the fact that no-one else will provide anythign like the same warranty cover says it all !

It took 4 days for Wilmslow to return my call with a few queries about the warranty exclusions and the forms themselves.

It took them all of 2 hours to call me today for my credit card details after they'd received the forms in the mail.

£££££

It is indeed that, it includes Porsche assist recovery which is good taking into acccount if you are driving a 987 there is no spare or jack so if you get a puncture and get them to take you to a garage to get it repaired rather than use that gunk stuff to get you home which I beleive requires you to then but a new tyre,,so if you add up the tow and a new tyre cost it can look like a not do bad a deal .

Our Boxster 987 S warranty expires at the end of August. It's hard to justify the £900.00 when the car has only done 13,000 miles. Porsches are one of the most reliable cars built and unless you chase the AR5E off it and do mostly track miles it shouldn't let you down. We've taken the view that £900.00 on a warranty is not money well spent. Time will tell us if we've made the correct decision but I won't be losing any sleep over it.

There speaks a man with deep pockets and a GT3[:D][:D] not sure all Porsche owners will agree about the build quality and reliability.though .we all know they should be but not all are, and for the cost it gives a lot of us a good nights sleep knowing we are covered..

The service and warranty coincide which add pressure for costs etc...I do low milleage in my 987 so decided to service it 2 days before the warranty expired and ditched the idea of a warranty, hope this helps. These cars are now more reliable than ever what could do wrong in a year worth more than £900?

A camshaft is £800 - RAC cover comparable to Porsche is £170 or more.

Engine £12k

Gearbox £8k

All depends on your attitude to risk !!

I warrant the GT3 but not the Boxster S, as said earlier, its down to your idea of risk
