F360 vs 996 turbo

a friend has a good tale of chasing a 456 round Thruxton for a few laps in his 220 Turbo then being confronted by it spinning 180 degrees

Following my theme of posting almost completely OT links (this one shamelessly knicked from a thread on PH) this vid at about 20 seconds is a bit scary for the opposite reason, I have a thing about F40's [:)] and the Lotus driver was being a bit of a ****.

 
The incident I am referring to in my RS6 was on a straight dual carriageway though and it was just a case of opening the throttle wide and hanging on.

So am I [;)] He had his son in his and I had my son in mine. We kicked off at about 50-60 (a few times) and there was no way he lost me in fact at three figures I was mildly quicker. The Fezza`s are quick to 60 thereafter they are not much quicker than ours with 1/4 mile times very similar but higher top speed. My mate`s is a paddle shift (crap slow sluggish shift) I would bet a manual will be quicker. I`ve driven it/borrowed it a few times and it doesnt feel quicker at all. I think they are around 1500kg with just under 400 bhp ish so on paper should be quicker. Perhaps his is down on power??

 
I currently have an F430 Scuderia (on loan for a project).

It's a wicked car, makes a huge statement, turns heads, fabulous noise, latest generation gearbox is very clever, and it's quite refined when you want. But, it retails pretty close to ÂŁ190,000 [:-]

However, if you want a road car with racing credentials, bit more under-stated, proper manual gearbox, more compact and with better steering, the 997 GT3 at half the price would get my vote.

Hmm. I'm not sure what that tells us. My only suggestion for the different experiences is that on the occasion I refer to we had 3 or 4 blats after being slowed down by other traffic and that we might have been operating in a speed range where I know the 944 Turbo has run out of puff somewhat.
 
just done some sums - I know in ultimate top speed weight doesn't factor so much as power and aerodynamics but for accelleration weight / power is more significant

Audi RS6 1800KG 500BHP = 0.277 BHP / KG

944T 1400KG 250BHP = 0.178 BHP/KG

1400KG 350BHP = 0.25 BHP/KG

1400KG 400BHP = 0.285 BHP/KG

Also wondered will an S2 do 60 in second gear?

Interestingly I had a little run with an RS4 when my car first had a 27/8 and was still on standard chips with boost enhancer. It was a cold winter day and its one of the occasions I had overboost trigger at around 4000rpm in 5th until which there was little in it thru 3rd, 4th, start of 5th, needless to say that killed my acceleration ;)

No, an S2 needs third to hit 60 which kills its 0-60 time.

I remember having a play with a then new RS4 when my Turbo was largely standard (might have had a boost enhancer). Basically he had a play with me and I thought "WOOT".

- I'd be more than a bit upset if someone started diving up the inside of my F40 on a trackday! [8|]

I've not seen many Ferraris on track - 2 that stick in the mind were a 360 in bits after a big shunt at Druids (Oulton) this year, and a blue 360 Spider, also at Oulton a few years ago, being driven very hard. I had a chat with the owner who told me that car had done 2000 miles, 1k of that on track, & was just about through his second set of tyres, pads & discs !!

Like any mid engined car, they are going to be a bit twitchy compared to the 944. When I went on a palmersport day a few years ago, the car everyone was spinning was the vx220 turbo.
 
I got AA'd home from Silverstone after my car blew up by a chap who used to fix the Palmersport VX fleet. He had all sorts of tales including that the press photo car was shown from the side as the other side had been wiped off on an Armco and that he once had to work for a double figure number of hours to repair damage to one last car for a session only to have it back in the garage with the back end smashed off after less than a lap.

Well the thing that measure doesn't take into account is gearing and other factors that affect acceleration. It's a pretty crude measure really. A case in point is the 911. It's usually quite a bit down on power than it's rivals and probably a bit heavier, but usually gives them a good pasting off the line with it's lack of power not really being a major disadvantage until you are upto and over 100mph where you need more and more HP to overcome drag.

I think the way he drove could have had mitigating circumstances. eg Perhaps they are a group that is familiar with everyone's cars and driving styles and had the guys in the GT3 and F40 been a bit better and watched their mirrors perhaps this wasn't as bad as it looked. The Ferrari just wasn't watching in that early corner fright, but the Lotus was never going to hit him even though he went in very deep under brakes. Just goes to show how easy the Lotus is to drive. Not saying anything bad about this guy's talents. In fact he can clearly pedal pretty well. He might have got a bit excited but if they all know each other then no harm done.

My 944S2 will hit 60mph in 2nd, you then hit the red line, the engine stutters on the limiter.

A lot depends on the "rules" of the day - on a UK track day, passing under braking into corners is not allowed, so you'd be a bit suprised to find someone driving like that & he'd soon be black flagged. European track days seem to be abit more relaxed. You'd certainly find people trying that at the ring at TF days (on lefthanders only) - and the car on the left has priority, so if you turn into him it's your fault, even if you didn't see him coming.
 
Of course that's correct. Most trackdays are pretty strict about the passing down here too. Although they seem to get a bit slack at the end of the day. For officiated Clubdays they really don't want us to pass anywhere but the straights. Insurance laws I'm assuming. Some days ones sees on Youtube seem very 'open' and as you say, perhaps in Europe they're more moderately administered.
I still like the looks of that track though. [:)]
 
The problem with this guy was, though he was clearly a capable driver (or just fearless) he was clearly showing off to his mate. If he was on his own he'd probably have been a bit more patient. Put it this way, if Lewis Hamilton (or anyone other than a Ferrari driver) had pulled that manoeuvre the FIA would have definitely penalised him.
 
I'd have to watch it again, but I'd be thinking that in a proper race (had contact occurred) the guy in the F40 would have been the one penalised for crossing the line and not watching his mirrors. He was clearly slower and using the more preferred line, and I grant that 'our hero' was quite likely influenced by his chum next to him, but I'd think in a race he would have continued under and through and the guy on the outside would have
'loosed cuz he snoozed'. Granted perhaps in open wheelers things could be different due to the ramifications of contact, but they would drive accordingly. You see plenty of in car footage durning sedan racing where guys just go under and through.
 
To be fair with the F40 driver being in the left seat, with his helmet on and the Lotus in his mirror blind spot I doubt he stood a cat in hells chance of seeing the Lotus, and with it being a hopelessly optimistic overtaking attempt he certainly wouldn't have been expecting it. He probably wasn't even aware it had happened at all until maybe he saw the clip for himself.

Regional and varying trackday etiquette is one thing, but a driver nearly T-boning another simply for bragging rights down the pub is a bit out of order considering you're not supposed to be racing and people are primarily there for fun.

Big respect for the guy even being there in his F40. Most F40's hardly see the light of day and spend most of their time being locked up in dark garages.

My recollection was that it hit the limiter in the high 50's, but you are probably right.

I believe your recollection is correct. I remember this from doing the 0-60 tests with the G-tech. The speedo on the dash will say something around or just over 60 but its really more like 57 or 58 mph based on gearing etc. Someone with a satnav that tells you your speed could probably confirm this. One thing for sure is that you absolutely must do a 2nd to 3rd shift to register a 0-60 on the G-tech, even hitting the limiter will not get the G-tech to register a 0-60.
