FAN problems !!!!

Even after i turn the ignition off, the fan keeps going till the battery is drained and dead !!!! i have taken the fuse out, to save the battery,... but does anyone have any experience with this...and the cost of fixing???
 
Common problem (broken sender in the rad), cheapish (~£20) part, easily DIYable. If you search for 'fan sender unit' or a similar phrase on this site, clark's garage etc you should be able to find lots of useful advice on how best to get to it etc.
 
the fan should run on for 10 minutes or so if the engine is hot. Its designed to do just that because the engine gets hotter for a while after you switch off. It should however switch off when the temperature drops. As riverside says you need a thermastatic switch (sender) . Don't make the mistake of re-routing the electrical feed so it switches off with the ignition or it won't do its job. I ran my Lux for 3 years without a fuse inserted. (too lazy to fit a new sender)If I hit a traffic jam or stationary traffic I would zip out and ram the fuse back in remembering to remove it when I arrived. [;)]
 
thats exactly what im planning on doing as the weather is cold and that air should do more than the fan at cooling!!! at least until i find a garage to fit a new sender...unless its an easy job for me to do.....would a garage charge alot?? are senders easy to come across??
 
Its a generic part it doesn't have to be a Porsche sender just one with the right thread and electrical tags to suit your connector.If you have to ask about such a simple DIY job then you would be advised to get a garage to do it (15 minute job tops)

i have found two...1: 944 auxiliary fan switch the second is a thermo fan switch....any thoughts....please.
 
you need the thermo-switch, dead easy to replace. You can get from GSF for £7, did mine a few weeks ago.

 
hi xenon and THANKYOU... i have just placed order, do you perhaps no of any links etc with regards to fitting? or is it obvious once the bonnets open????
 
It is a real pain the bum to fit - it's easy (basically unscrew the old one out and screwthe new one in) but access is a pig. It is fitted in the back of the top right corner of the radiator as you stand over the engine bay looking down. If you bend down and look at the back of the radiator you should be able to see it. You basically have to get your hand through a very small gap to remove and refit. I took one look and decided there was no way my hand was going to get through there and be in fit shape to operate any tools so I popped it down to my local specialist. Years of experience means he had made his own piece of tooling for this job due to access difficulties and replaced it in half an hour.

He then ran a test to make sure it was working. The test was that he timed how long it took the rad fans to cool the engine i.e. how long they ran for from switching on to switching off. The Porsche book says 2 minutes with the engine running and 4 minutes with the engine off as when the engine is off only one of the two fans runs to conserve battery power. Mine was outside those limits so he did a bit more troubleshooting and found the thermostat was not working properly, so that was changed. Anyway it brought my cooling times back within limits.
 
By the way you'll need to drain your radiator. The bung is in the lower bottom corner of the radiator and is a big blue plastic screw with a phillips head. Once you unscrew it the coolant will go everywhere as it doesn't have a clear route to drain and with splatter all over the place. Once you're done with all that and you've re-filled the engine will coolant you'll have to vent the system!
 
Easy if you have the right tools! You need a 1 and 1/4" deep socket and an extension bar. You can then put the socket on the bar and the socket over the sender - then attach the ratchet wrench. Easy peasy!
 
the 944 came with two types of switch a two pin or three pin (for cars with AC) check how many pins before you order on my site they are 944.606.481.00 2 pin or 951.606.481.00 3 pin
 
That's true, but all S2 cars have dual fans and a three-pin sender even if they don't have A/C.
 
hi all, had a good long look today and popped the fuse back in, the whirring air noise began again although the actual fan was'nt spinning...mmmmmm!! could this still be the thermo switch?? or something else......

Did mine from below, no problem.

Any body know the on and off temperatures for both circuits in the dual switch?

the OEM switch at 92oC and 102oC. The switch I got from GSF was 82oC and 92oC so the fans come on a bit earlier - no big deal it doesn't seem to over-cool the engine.
