Farewell to my 968 Club Sport

Well, well, well, the CS has gone! Never thought I would see the day when it would be sold. I have owned my CS for nearly 8 years, and I am quite sure a few of you know it well. It has gone through quite some transition over the years under my ownership into a CS that must be up there with the best of them.

I am pleased to say that it has gone to a enthusiast, and will be used as a track focused car should be. It went as a private sale without advertising and through word of mouth. I applaud the new owner for his patience and commitment"¦he first approached me last year and has applied light sincere pressure ever since. It worked. I had started to prep to immaculate condition for longer term ownership, but alas, once completed relinquished to the offer. With racing, work "" and perhaps the condition of the car it was not getting due use, so after much deliberation deemed it the right time to move on and let someone else enjoy the ownership. I took pride that the new owner, after looking at his fair share over the last year, judged it to be in a different league to anything he had seen.

Feels kind of empty in the garage now, even a lump in my throat when I handed over my 8" et52 Cup 2's, but we move on and have plans for something else. Looking for an interim car however, to play with over the summer with more regular use, will let you know what comes up. Longer term, the car I want comes from the early 70's, have escalated beyond my means but a model is available that can be "˜tweaked'"¦.and those whom know me will know what this means!

Thoroughly enjoyed ownership, met some great like minded people, one or two (to be honest one in particular) has influenced my life greatly, perhaps sowed the seed of the sale by encouraging me to "˜lets go get a race license' and the subsequent change in motoring preference. I'll still lurk, and BigDave and Mr Follett will still keep me honest with their 968's.

Some photo's for your enjoyment "" my brother is a professional photographer (NOTE "" these are my attempts, not his) whom will eventually hand over some high quality images which may appeal to some of you (anyone know how I can host very large size images)

All the best

JP

Jason

Only got to see your car once and it looked fantastic.

I know you spent many many hours on it but what did you do to it in terms of mods etc

What's the finish on the cam covers and inlet manifold?

Rich

Rich - we'll have a discussion some time re mods, tended not to 'air' too much on that front. Powdercoated covers/manifold, very bright silver, might even be precoated with a black colour (remember having some wheels done that way once - similar to the black chrome style). Don't know the details but the local powder coating company did it. Will ask next time i am in.

Brake ducts are 993 items, fit is ok - they tend to be a little lacking in height so the interspace is fitted with a self adhesive 'D' shape soft rubber than i bought at a car show. Finishes them off nicely, and the soft nature of the seal tapers down to almost nothing where the ducts are curved on the inner part nearer to the number plate.

JP

Yes they came off my car, many moons ago.[;)][:D]

Just got to add , the chap that has bought JP,s car is one VERY VERY lucky man.
Ive been around these 968,s for longer than i realy dare to remember and seen a LOT of very nice ones,,,,

BUT,,,

JP,s is and was THE best ive ever seen and possibly driven, in every way possible.... Then again it should be , knowing the amount of TLC and £££££ he gave it....

The days that we had chasing, dare i say racing round the likes of Oulton and Donington, within inches of each others cars, beggers belief, as im sure a few are testament to....[;)][:D][;)][:D][;)]
Funny realy, as were doing just the same in the E30,s now....[8|][8|][8|]

Just to add, and not trying to hijack the thread, BUT if anybody is after a VERY highly modded, track focused 968 "Sport". Ive decided to sell mine.....

Shock horror...

No, not just because Jason has sold his, its just ive got too many "projects", racing et all, and nowhere near enough time to enjoy the 68....[8|][8|][8|][8|][8|].
Ill be posting an add soon..................... When i get round to it.......But if your interested in the mean time, just drop me a pm....

Jason, you wont be 968,less for long mate......[;)][;)][;)][;)][:D][:D][:D][:D]

as you know Dave, that 964 turbo is beckoning [;)]

Difference with the e30's though is contact :ROFLMAO:

I think all but two seals replaced (think it was the two across the top of the door bodywork as it joins the window)

Thanks for all your input regarding 968s over the years Jason. Some very valuable input in the early years of my ownership! My car still has the M030 suspension and brakes fitted, which I bought from you.

Hope the E30 racing is going well too

Marv

So it's the end of an era for both of you guys . . .

JP, I remember the paxlap around Donington a couple of years back when you and Big Dave were tearing around, Melbourne Loop antics were fun - good times [:)]

Big Dave, good luck with the sale dude and thanks for your invaluable help through my 968 ownership . . .

All the best with the E30's and future projects guys! [:D]

Jason, must say it is a really great car, very impressive round both Donington and Silverstone and I hope the new owner uses it and enjoys it as you did.

With Paz I think!

Cheers

I dont know how I will recognise you without your gorgeous 968.
Hope you come & say hello at Silverstone & other venues.

Best regards

John Frith

Marv, of late i find myself forgetting more and more re 968 intricacies. Mentioned you to my partner and she remembers well meeting you - must have left a good impression. e30 racing could be going better, generally two thirds down the grid, hugely competitive race series and not 'dialled' into it as much as much as i thought i could by now. e30 drives rather differently, have to grab it by the scruff of the neck...and on full throttle almost as soon as you lift of the brakes, and then hang on for dear life!....i have a passenger seat in mine if you fancy a ride on a trackday.

Paz, have one of your photos as my background!....will have to replace it with one from my brother when i eventually get them!

Mike, Paz was remarkebly calm....or was that scared! I'll get him in the e30 one day, now that IS scary.

Joh, i am going to try to get along to a few of the shows this year if they don't clash.

Going to have to pester Dave to get his Riviera blue m030 car on the road. Shame he is selling his Sport though. I went out in it at Oulton last week and it was truly exhilirating. It felt so precise, composed and planted, did not step out of line once, forgot how well developed and set-up his car was. Really missed having mine there. In fact i remember saying that after driving our e30's his 68 was far more capable than we as drivers had in us. After driving the e30's as we have, then going back to a well set-up 68 puts things into persepctive.

JP

Jason.
Thanks for the kind words,,, the "cheques in the post",, just kidding.
I must say that after driving the E30 for a while ,,getting back into the 968 was like putting on a comfy pair of shoes, although it did take me a few laps to dial myself into the precice feel of the car...
Anyway,,,
Paz, im not leaving the 968 fold just yet, as you know i have my M030 Riviera blue car to sort out...[;)][:D]
For anyone interested heres a pic that Paz took at Donny a few years ago of the Iris Blue car.....

Advert soon to follow.....

Jason - hi, bit of an open letter here:

Difficult to know what to say at a time like this, have been lurking but now am ready to break my silence.

Firstly -- I for one am priviliged to have known both you and the car for most of the time you have owned it. Your ownership of that car has been a lesson to anyone who wants to take their modding seriously -- I just play at it a little, you are a master of the art.

Those photos are great, think I should just take 4 or 5 and include them in my next Porsche Post article -- no words required (get back to me on that pls)

We all have to move on and it is re-assuring that quality craftmanship does command a decent price when we have seen how the market has slowly declined of late. Mind you totalling how many hours you have put in would I guess surprise us all - you included.

Another thing that has just occurred to me is that this car is no garage queen, it has done it's road miles and you've driven it at many circuits gobbling up a few GT3's along the way, especially at events like the Oulton Park RS Days.

I am not sure if you have mentioned it anywhere but I believe your car is the most powerful normally aspirated 968 in these parts, You worked hard to squeeze as much bhp out of the engine and that is a story which you have yet to expand on in any detail - unless I have missed it.

Good luck with your next project, well strictly speaking you have already done that ie your race E30, so it should be good luck with the one after that ................

Your banter with Big Dave et al on the other forum got me intrigued by the 968, with it's GT3 slaying abilities!! It's your fault![:D]

Thanks for the kind words Paul (£10 inthe post). Re photos, no problem, will pester my brother for his hi-res images and send them down.

Yes, kept, reasonably, quiet about the power. As a normally aspirated 968 it might well be up there as the most powerful, but who knows, few knew what mine was putting out so perfectly reasonable that there is another out there. They do say the white ones are quicker, there was another for sale recently that was close to mine (but not quite [;)]), which might make it the second most...but as i say, white ones.

I had problems with my cams some time ago, the case hardening started to wear ont he cam lobes of one cam. Damaged the followers on one side. Having to replace the cams + the mileage ont he car decided to have the head refreshed also. This was back in the day when we got some good $ for the £. Secured a used head in the US for next to nothng, shipped it to RS Barn (after prolonged telephone conversations with Pete at RS Barn). Pete worked his magic, some porting/polishing (more on the exhaust side), a couple of high lift cams, one of his very rare ported, polished and bored throttle bodies (which is still on the car), slightly higher pressure fuel regulator and injectors cleaned. Airbox mod - but into the area at the bottom and intot he cowling pickup for the radiator. Couple of iterations with the exhaust finally settling on the Cargraphic system with 200 cell cat. Lightweight flywheel (same weight as the RS turbo) and heavy duty clutch. Chip reprogrammed by Pete taking in lieu the mods. Amongst all this a few dyno runs testing different stages, with the final iteration being Wayne Schofield waving his wand live mapping the car. The result was 267bhp. Numbers meaningless though. I had good gains all through the rev range. A different map (one of Petes 2 that i had) gave some notable gains mid range over Mr Schofields map but lost out further up.

Incidentally, i have driven another 968 since mine went. Interestingly i thought pickup was blunted and dull, quite lethargic. Notwithstanding the flywheel, the throttle body definately made a difference on my old 968, perhaps little additional power but much better throttle response and notable mid range pull. I've driven more powerful cars in the past, and even bikes but have to say the pickup on my old 68 from mid range will be something i miss for a long time.

Will look to see if i have the graphs still.
